Buying wedding dresses abroad

KateP, 26 June, 2008 at 23:27 Posted on Planning 0 7

Has anyone brought their dress abroad? I hav e heard you can make big savings and am going to the U.S. on hols later this year so wondered if it would be worth looking into. Am a bit anxious at the thought but if I could save pennies it may be worthwhile. Would appreciate any feedback

I haven't but make sure you factor in the customs charges when you work out the cost.

Be really sure though, what if it needs altering? What if there is a problem with it when it arrives? Will you transport it home with you?

So many things to think about.

I've had mine made out here in Thailand and it has cost me about 350 pounds, so there are definite savings. I am transporting it in a large suit carrier and the airline have agreed to hang it up for me in first class. Don't think I'll have to pay any customs charges on it.

My only concern is any last minute fittings I may need, but I'm home a month before the wedding so hopefully I will stay the same size for that month - and not eat too many bacon sandwiches or chocolate bars (the things I really miss and can't get out here) before the wedding! The worst case scenario is I will have to find a seamstress to take the dress in if I lose through nerves. But even if I pay for additional changes the dress will still have cost me a lot less than buying in the UK.

I got mine in Boston, I went to Davies (or possibly Davis?) Bridal which is a huge out of town bridal warehouse, they had loads to choose from between $300 and $750 and thanks to the exchange rate that works out very cheap indeed! I didn't need alterations or anything so was able to buy one off the peg. As for bringing it back I just put in a carrier and asked them to hang in the 1st class suit cupboard - you might need to check with airline beforehand that they can do this, I just turned up but got a speil about how very lucky I was they had room.

You can cut down on customs charges by taking all the labels off and saying it's not new. ?
