Cake - round or square?

hutchy12, 8 April, 2008 at 14:47 Posted on Planning 0 6

Which do you think is easier to ice (with sugarpaste), a circle or a square fruit cake?

I'm doing my SIL's cake and she says she would probably prefer round but she's not that bothered. The only time I have iced a round cake with sugarpaste it had a big ribbon round the bottom so I could get away with it being a bit ropey. I'm just wondering whether I should try to talk her into having a square cake as I'm a bit more confident with that...

So what do you think? Will I be okay icing a round cake?

How about a little round cake as a trial and then you can enjoy it! Even if it's just a 6-7 inch round cake?

If your SILs not that bothered then go for a square cake. Either way i'd do a trial run.

We're having a square cake, no other reason other than we liked the design, however i suppose it'll also be much easier to cut.

Hi there - Cake HIB here

Round cakes are MUCH easier to cover with sugarpaste than square cakes. In fact, hexagonal, oval, petal in fact pretty much every other shape is easier to cover than square!

Getting the sides straight, top edges even and corners right is all much more tricky than covering a round cake.

Most sugarcraft/cake decorating courses cover icing a round cake and then afterwards when people do their first square they wonder why it all went wrong!

However, all that said do what you are most confident with.

p.s. you could buy a small round dummy cake and some sugarpaste to do a trial run on - then if you're not happy you can strip off the icing and start again. Unfortunately, you can't reuse the sugarpaste but at least you won't have to make (and eat?) a real cake every time.

    Hi Catherine,

Thanks for your reply. I've only just seen it. It turns out that someone has just asked me to do a cake for something else so I'm going to do a round one for that and treat it as a dummy run. If it goes horribly wrong I'll just put a big ribbon round the bottom! Thanks again.

I prefer round cakes. My reason is that I love the icing more than the cake, and when the venues cut round cakes for weddings, they tend to square them off first - I then get to eat loads of icing and very little cake! ?

Sorry - not much help to you though. [:I]
