Cake stand help!

beccak, 31 July, 2014 at 10:02 Posted on Planning 0 15

Has anyone bought a 14 or 15" diameter round cake stand? I'm finding it impossible to find one!

We're getting married at a 'self catering' venue, so they don't have one. My cake lady only had one of the low silver stands which I don't really like the look of, so I said I would try to buy one myself.

Ideally I want a porcelain pedestal type one, but they don't seem to exist in this size! I've Googled & googled and searched eBay to no avail Smiley sad

Does anyone have any DIY ideas for how to make a round stand? I don't want a tree log. I saw a guide for making one out of a lazy susan with a sawn-down table leg or five cupboard knobs attached but with under 5 weeks to go I don't have time to source or make something that requires actual woodworking!

Thanks!

Could you find a nice large serving plate and maybe attach a matching upturned bowl or cup to the bottom???

I know you don't really want silver but there's one here. http://cakestandland.co.uk/wedding-shop-181-c.asp

    I'll keep looking for porcelain.

Thanks for the suggestions! MOMB that glass one could be a contender - that's the biggest one I've seen! I'd found the other website but the £115 price tag put me off! I wouldn't mind silver per se, I'm just not keen on the style of the ones that look like this

I've already tried looking for a large flat serving platter but can't find one the right size. Our bottom tier is 11 inches, which the cake lady says will be best on a 14 or 15 inch board, so I wouldn't have thought I'm looking for something unusual!

How many tiers are you having? a 2/3 tier cake can become rather heavy and you need to make sure that you get a stand that will support the weight, i would say your struggling to find a stand due to the strength/support that it will need to hold the cake thats why most wedding cake stands have the widest bit at the bottom

Have you thought of approaching other cake makers they sometimes rent stands out so you might be able to get one without the investment

Thanks kharding2014, that's exactly what I'd like but I'm worried it's too small. What size cake are you putting on that? Link says it is 33cm diameter, which is 13 inches. My bottom tier is 11 inches but when I asked the cake lady what size stand I need she said "The diameter of the cake stand will need to be at least 14" preferably 15", let me know what size you order so I can buy appropriate base board".

Does it matter if the board is a bit bigger than the top of the stand? Would that look ridiculous?

I found this one which is almost 14 inches (35cm) but it's green Smiley sad
