Cake Toppers - overrated??!

Ladykake, 4 October, 2014 at 21:03 Posted on Planning 0 48

So i think most of our major wedding bits and pieces are complete with four weeks to go! Horray!

So now I feel i am looking for things to buy for the sake of it!

I just wondered who is having/had a cake topper on their cake? Could you do a cheeky flash?

Im in a do we/don't we kind of mood and having a look on various sites - NOTHS - ETSY, EBAY etc can i justify the outlay?!

Our cake is four tiers, gold to ivory ombre ruffle cake - i wouldn't want to take away any of the detail on the cake?

Any thoughts!?

xx

    Hey,

We're thinking the same thing. I like the idea of little people but paying over £100 for them seems a little crazy and I'm not sure I would want cheap ones that you throw them away as isn't the whole idea to keep them?

We're going to ask a friend to make something out of straw or a different friend to make something out of wood as it'll fit into out rustic theme and be (hopefully) simple and beautiful.

I think of your cake has lots of details then a cake topper won't be missed.

At this point, I would think that if you wanted or needed a topper you'd have one... the ones I'm looking at are just little ceramic birds and/or a little banner-type one with our names. I don't think they're necessary by any means! Just another cute keepsake Smiley smile

I didn't want to spend money on a cake topper so I just used one of the silk roses that I used for the bouquets and placed it on top of the cake. It all matched then too!

We are getting (just ordered it for our wedding on November)

It's expensive. But we wanted something to keep, just for us. We haven't booked a photographer so we've justified it by weighing up not having pics well never look at versus an ornament we can have on display

Personally I find them often quite tacky if we are talking the 'mini bride and groom' ones but then im not vain enough to want a tiny doll of myself and I cant for the life of me think what people do with them afterwards... do you really display them on your fireplace etc... like a tiny little creepy talking point for guests?

I have seen some lovely alternative ones though, I think we will get something simple like a letter but our cake is really simple so anything big would look silly

I saw one with two dear heads (guessing a 'bust' ornament) which was adorable (I love animals) but would not fit our theme or cake at all... be creative though you can put anything on top and its more likely to be remembered Smiley smile

    This is what we had:

The vase on top is a family tradtion - it was on my grandparents cake, my parents, sister and now mine

Husband also wanted a bride and groom so we got one made. It is out of clay and so we can keep it. It is now on one of our shelves. It is a lovely momento and memory of our day

My sister made the cake, and the flowers are from the florist.

What a bizarre thing to say. I have my wedding toppers up in my lounge - I hardly find it creepy, just a memento of my wedding day. I also have wedding photos of me and H up in my house as well - is that vain and creepy as well?

I love the mini bride and grooms personally - it's a nod to the traditional bride and groom at the top of the cake but it's nice if the details link in with the day people. Can't see how it's vain? It's not like you're flashing loads of pics of yourself all over the cake? I think they're a nice little keepsake too from the day, in the same way people keep brooch bouquets, garters, etc. It's up to you if you want to spend out, it's nice to have something on top and scrimping on something that doesn't look right could ruin the look of the cake.

So.... creepy little people is a no no but dear little heads aka decapitated people or deer little heads aka decapitated animals are ok? That's weird Smiley smile

I love our creepy little people but have shut them away in a glass cabinet just in case I can't get away from talking about them (us)

I'm stuck between TWO options..... a Willow Tree ornament/cake topper (I have 5 already which are very meaningful and like them) but as we're having a "heese" cake i thought it'd be kinda cool to have 2 mice bride & groom where their tails link into a heart shape (seen it in a magazine)

Well this post definitely brightened my evening!

I think we may just go with some flowers, keep it simple.

I do like the personalised cake toppers, moreso than the run of the mill samey ones!

Thanks for ideas and opinions! x

First time round I just had flowers.

This time I'm trying to find someone to make this white chocolate sculpture to go on my milk and white chocolate cake.

I wasn't going to have one, our cake maker was just going to put some sugarpaste flowers on the top. But then I came across some on Etsy that featured dogs so I immediately changed my mind and ordered a set to include our pug! They're made of thin acrylic so I'm going to put them in a box frame with a our wedding date written on a card.

We had bunting on both our cakes (cake of cake and cake of cheeses). I feel I may have missed out on a creepy talking point now. perhaps my guests have nothing to talk about when they visit us.

Our creepy talking points from Kharv now sit on the bookshelf. One of the cats keeps naughtily climbing up and knocking her sisters counterparts off though...

Definitely not creepy, it's a personal touch.

I had penguins, as that is what we call each other. They were a hit with the guests and now sit on our bookshelf (next to my silk flower bouquet!)

Well everybody I have shown my creepy little talking point to have absolutely loved them. I can't wait to have them on my cake ?

We weren't going to bother with cake toppers until I saw ours and had to have them but I don't think you need to have them if it's not something you're too bothered about!

We had a miniature replica of our pet pig 'dressed' as a bridesmaid. And yes, mini Poppy sits on the mantle piece while life-size Poppy sleeps by the fire. Quite the creepy talking point!

Also, while from the front our cake looked very traditional, from the back the cake maker had painted muddy trotter-prints in chocolate up the icing so it looked like she had climbed up to sit on top. Gutted nobody got a photo of that!
