Calgon tablets in every wash ..

Orly Bird, 30 January, 2009 at 15:41 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

Absolute necessity, or clever marketing ploy ?

We have a new washing machine - which I want to look after better than the last one. However, I'm a bit loathed to put a calgon tablet in every wash if I don't have to. (We live in a hard water area).

Thoughts and opinions, please ?

Not tried them to be honest, I did think about it when we rented a flat on a farm with borehole water but couldn't afford too 'splash out' on washing tabs at the time so never bothered, the washing machine survived and in fact we moved house with it twice and ended up selling it with a flat. Had it for about 6 years and it was still going strong.

I tend to think it's a clever marketing ploy but am more than happy to stand corrected.

That looks quite good - thanks. I've had a look at what they say about Calgon tablets, and it looks like it's a clever marketing ploy. Oh well, we needn't get a second box when this one has finished.

We're in a very hard water area - get limescale on everything - round taps in bathroom, in the shower, in the kettle and iron, in the steamer.

So we use calgon type products - have switched to supermarket own brand. We also have to regularly use de-scaling products on the kettle and iron.

H is always spouting about how calgon is boll*cks. Mostly the advert in saying what the cause of most break downs are, its the brushes that are the most common problem. (I get told this everytime the advert is on)

I don't think you're very far away from me? I have hardwater too and get limescale in the bathroom but Ecover gets rid of it pretty well. Is it bad that I have never looked instead my kettle? ??

We're in Southfields (in between Putney & Wimbledon) - that near you?

I only notice the kettle when I get manky bits in the bottom of my tea.

And similarly, the iron gets noticed when it blasts manky brown bits all over the clean washing from the steam vents!

I use the CIF limescale and mildew remover in the bathroom - it's wonderful stuff.

And I have a special bleach & limescale remover thing in the toilet. It was horrific the amount of limescale that came out of our loo when I first started using it.

Ah no, but I work in the Wick of Chis, so that's not a million miles away. I am on the Gherkin-side of the city - about 10 minutes walk from the Tower of London.

I think SB is the only person to ever use my kettle so I'll tell him to keep an eye out for mankiness!

Luckily iron is new so don't have to worry about that for a bit (I've used it twice since I've had it! Lazy jeans-wearing job!)

I thought you were out East - my sister used to live there - almost opposite St Katherine's Dock. Tres expensive.

Chiswick is lovely. In fact the whole area is. My H aspires to live in East Sheen - he thinks it looks lovely every time we drive through it.

Ah I know SKD well, in particular the duck pizzas at the Dickens Inn! I'm less than a mile from there.

Chiswick is lovely and I could never afford to live there in a million years - annoying that the job I went for on Tuesday is in Holborn - sooooo close.

That would have been fab. I can see why you hate the district line! That's a heck of a commute - at least you don't have to change lines though.

And I've nothing meaningful to add on your job thread. I think I'm very lucky in that I've got a PA job which is now about to become a compliance assistant role and is going to train me up in to something which everyone says I will be very good at (I like process and method - it's the science graduate in me).

I think right now is a time to hunker down and ride everything out for a year - there doesn't seem to be much happening work wise.

    Good luck!
