Apologies in advance for a fairly boring post, but, do you put a comma before the postcode in an address?

I don't usually, but thought that either way is considered correct. Does it make a difference if the address is all on the same line?

42 Cherry Tree Lane, Tunbridge Wells, Kent TN1 1YB OR

42 Cherry Tree Lane, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, TN1 1YB

42 Cherry Tree Lane

Tunbridge Wells

Kent TN1 1YB

OR

42 Cherry Tree Lane

Tunbridge Wells

Kent, TN1 1YB

    I would put a comma as it would usually be a different line?

    I'm not sure if I'm right but I would do either this;

    42 Cherry Tree Lane, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, TN1 1YB

    or this;

    42 Cherry Tree Lane

    Tunbridge Wells

    Kent

    TN1 1YB

    I'd do this.

    But I am probably wrong.

    I would also do this.

    I think I was taught at school to put commas at the end of each line but I never do that now.

    If I put the postcode on the same line, I wouldn't include a comma. This is how I usually write addresses.

    42 Cherry Tree Lane,
    Tunbridge Wells,
    Kent TN1 1YB

    But if it was on a separate line, for whatever reason, it gets a comma.

    42 Cherry Tree Lane,
    Tunbridge Wells,
    Kent,
    TN1 1YB

    If writing out an address by hand, I usually underline the postcode too, which marks it out.

    You never use a comma before the postcode!

    This is the correct way;

    42 Cherry Tree Lane, Tunbridge Wells, Kent TN1 1YB

    I always write it this way, but wasn't sure why. Probably because my ma has always written it this way.

    I see it like this a lot so I'm sure you're correct Tricks. It just doesn't look right to me though.

    You could put a full stop after Kent (I think) as the postcode is, in effect, a new sentence.

    The BBC says different....

    For any future questions my mum showed me this site (she teaches English as a foreign language and uses this all the time) - it has games and everything! Much more fun than when I 'learned' grammar at school Smiley smile
