Can anyone answer / explain a CATs KS1/2 question?

Cloudybay, 30 June, 2009 at 22:12 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

As above really, I just wondered if a 2b is average for a child in Y2 (KS1) is 2b average of a child in Y3, or should it be 3b or something else. Y2 is KS2 isnt it?

Thank you.

You mean SATs, I presume? ? Yes, a 2b is average for the end of Y2. A 4B is average for the end of Y6.

Catwoman, can I ask a quick question? It's about reading. Storyworlds level 7 ( with a brown circle on the back), what sort of age child would you expect to be reading them? We've recently had the frog prince & also Pied piper (very creepy!).

KS1 has one level per year group (L1 for Y1 and L2 for Y2). Once they hit KS2, there is one level per 2 year groups, so approximately a 1B average Y1, 2B average Y2, 3B average Y4 and as Catwoman says, 4B average Y6.

Iris, am I right that your son is just finishing Reception? If so, the books you are talking about sound quite good for that age. Banding is different from school to school and am not a huge fan of it personally but at my school, most Reception are still reading quite repetitive style texts (think Oxford Reading Tree Level 3 if you know them)

Sorry Iris, I disappeared off to do some work....[shock, horror!] I'm not familiar with the particular scheme your son is reading, but would agree with MsCamel that is sounds like he's doing quite well if he's only in reception. A quick google found this -http://www.pearsonschoolsandfecolleges.co.uk/AssetsLibrary/SECTORS/Primary/PDFs/StructureCharts/Storyworlds08.pdf

(sorry bout enormous link....) which shows that Storyworlds Level 7 is meant for 6-7 year olds, so Y2? If he's only reception, he's doing brilliantly. Saying that, they all develop at very different rates, particularly at the younger end of the curriculum.

Thanks ladies, much appreciated. Yep, he finishes reception tomorrow so he'll be a big grown up boy! I thought he was doing quite well but for all I know he could be rubbish and the rest reading War and Peace.

I'm so glad he's good at reading as I enjoy reading the books with him, any more Biff & Chip would drive me demented. That's the plus side of banded reading. But, wow, year 2-that's better than I thought.
