Can i do the legal bit after a symbolic wedding abroad?

Annie, 26 August, 2021 at 00:48 Posted on Honeymoons & Getting Married Abroad 0 3
Hi all, I’m having a symbolic ceremony in Menorca, Spain in 6 weeks and I’m suddenly panicking about whether I need to do the legal bit first.

I’m fully aware that the symbolic wedding isn’t legal in any sense, it’s essentially a party, and we decided we wanted to do the paperwork on our return to the UK at our local registry office.
I would love some reassurance as to whether this is ok as I’ve seen a lot of people doing the paperwork first which is worrying me! The venue haven’t asked for anything but I would love some answers for peace of mind!
Thanks,Annie

As far as I'm aware there's no legal obligation to have the civil ceremony prior to the blessing abroad as the latter isn't legally recognised in the UK or Spain so there's nothing to worry about. We were planning to have the civil ceremony before our blessing in Spain but have had to swap them due to circumstances beyond our control.

Thanks Ebony. That’s what I thought, it’s just always nice to get some reassurance!

As long as the bit abroad is purely a party with a mock vow ceremony then I think you are fine as no legal part, can do either way round whichever works for you. Friends did it before but use the date of the party as their anniversary celebration date. Good Luck
