Can i have a Bagpiper and a String Quartet?

Jamie, 8 January, 2022 at 08:29 Posted on Planning 0 3
I'm getting married in Scotland and have a lot of close Scottish heritage that's important to me. Before getting engaged, I've never been the type to plan or fantasise about my wedding day really, but the one thing I always thought was important was a bagpiper.

I love the sound and the feelings they evoke, and want to include one as part of our day, but really I'd only want one for guests arriving and maybe after the ceremony. FH and I agreed we'd love a string quartet playing film scores and modern songs to walk down the aisle to though, and for drinks before dinner etc. Maybe during dinner too.
So now I ask - is it greedy to have both? And if we do have both, how do we balance who plays when? Will anyone even come to play for just an hour, or do we need to book longer sets?
Has anyone else had both and can maybe offer some insights?

It is not greedy, is your day so you have what you want. I would say the quartet could also play at your cocktail hour after ceremony while you have photos done. Maybe ring round a few artists and talk through your wants and see what they say and what their minimum times are and they you can go from there to decide

Down here in the Midlands I do not see very many bagpipers but over the years I have seen a few and the main times they have played was playing you out of the ceremony and then later playing you into the wedding breakfast room. So that would work as the strings could then take over playing.

I have never seen one to be there all day but as they are effectively waiting to play you into the wedding breakfast then they have also played a little during the drinks and photos, -- somewhere off in the distance though Smiley xd

Speak to one and ask them how they think it could fit into your plans I don't think they expect to ever play long sets at a wedding. But as I say that is based on my experience down here for Leicestershire weddings.

    Hello!

My fiancé is a musician who plays weddings and I have been to many Scottish weddings, it's very common for the piper just to play as the guests arrive for the ceremony or to pipe the couple out of the ceremony or into the reception.. and the string quartet can play during the rest of your ceremony/reception Smiley smile It sounds like a brilliant combination of music! My fiancé runs Woohoo Band across Scotland, they have a Hitched profile and run bespoke wedding music Smiley smile
