can levothyroxine make your periods late?

Gone With The Whinge, 30 May, 2008 at 14:17 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

My period is nearly two weeks late - I've only just calculated, doh. My thyroxine dose has been upped and lowered again since the last one, so could that have done it? I googled and there's not much info at all.

I take it that you've got an underactive thyroid.

From my understanding, periods can go haywire if you're TF is having a bit of a wobble. It's all to do with the getting the right balance, so yep, if your thyroxine has been highered then lowered, it could be your body's way of reacting to the adjustment.

There are other factors too that aren't anything to do with thyroxine..... pregnancy, stress, not eating properly etc.

Yes, underactive, My periods returned (was bfing) after starting it and have had two regular ones...now the gap. Should probably test to be on the safe side but I don't really want to ?

I've got an underactive thyroid and my periods were really all over the place before the doctor got my thyroxine levels to normal.

I'd test anyway though just to be sure.

Even if it's an outside chance of being pregnant, I'd test - there's potential problems about having an under- or over-active thyroid during pregnancy.

Thanks for the advice all. After a big panic I ran to the chemist, and can confirm that I'm not up the duff. My next thyroid test is in a week or so, so hopefully things will settle once the dosage is correct.
