Can someone explain storage heaters to me?

Headless Lois, 1 October, 2008 at 11:32 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

I have Dimplex ones.

They have two knobs - an input one (I have set it to 6 as it suggests this for 'cold') and also a room temp boost button.

This has settings 1-9 and says 1-no boost, 2- late boost, 9-early boost.

I want to be able to heat the place from 12pm-8pm weekdays, 10am-4pm weekends. Do I need to set the second knob differently for the weekend - and to what?

thanks

Storage heaters dont work like that (we have them )

Basically they heat up through the night on economy 7 then chuck out heat all through the day, you cant jsut set them to come on for 4 hours per day.

Ours at the moment are set on input 3 and output 2.. i will adjust this as it gets colder.

I think they are a pain in the arse but as there is no gas supply to our property we have no choice but to use them for the time being! Basically the input level is how much energy they are drawing in (and affects your energy consumption and therefore bill) and the output level (how much heat they allow to escape)

So if you have the output button any higher than the input, they give out the heat as soon as it is drawn in, so you could be wasting energy overnight. If you have the input level very low, it stores less heat so will run out more quickly when you start to let it out.

The best way we have found to use them is to check the weather for the next day and set the input accordingly, with the output on zero. Then increase the output when we get home, to allow heat out when we need it. The energy is stored through the night as it is not required.

Does this make any sense at all? It does in my head.

I had the boost ones too. They are for topping up for a short period- basically they act like a fan heater. They gobble electric too.

OK, so should I turn the boost one down to 0 and they'll just bang out 'an amount' of heat until they're out of juice?

We used to have them in our flat and I hated them! We would put them on so they would store heat overnight and would have to put the boost on as soon as we got home at 6pm as all the heat had dissipated. The boost dial was just 1-6 so I'm not sure about the early/late boost thing. They do gobble electricity though - in our small 1 bed flat we had 2, a small one in the hall and a larger one with a boost in the living room, and we literally used double the electricity over the 5-6 months the heating was on than the 6 it was off.
