can you break the hand brake by putting it on too tight?

Ginger, 6 October, 2008 at 17:24 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

Is that a silly question?

I couldn't get my handbrake off this morning after a man had put it on. He says i don't put it on properly, i say he is going to yank it off with his obsession with it?

well?

Don't know about it breaking but I also get that same problem after H has driven the car. I think there have been times where I've had to nearly stand on the seat to get enough leverage to move the bloody thing.

And yes, I get accused of not putting is on enough.

Not unless it's already weak/frayed. As long as it's adjusted properly it should hold well with a few clicks as it does to it's limit.

It should hold unless it is old, in which case the cable can snap.

Possibly putting it on too tight can stretch/fray it, but I think that would take a few years of reefing on it.

Tell him you had to take it to a garage to be adjusted and they said it had probably been stretched due to being pulled on too tight ?
