can you destain stainless steel?

Headless Lois, 18 February, 2009 at 12:56 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

We made the mistake of putting cheap kitchen sink in at the studio and, despite the fact it gets regularly cleaned with Cif, it is manky. Is there a fab product that will restore it? I don't think even shiny sinks is going to do it on this one

Are you using the Cif Stainless Steel Cleaner? I've found that really good at bringing our sink back to its former glory.

No, I am just using Cif normal everything cleaner. Thing is, did your sink look like it had been left filled with tea for three weeks?

Lois - I second the recommendation. It's fantastic stuff.

I've jused it on our hob for really cooked on nastiness - leave it for a few seconds and wipe up and it's lovely & shiny.

Lois - our sink looked like my H had been in charge of the cleaning for 3 weeks ?

It is good stuff though, as Alison said, it's great on hobs and cooker hoods too, really cuts through the dirt.

If you have any rust spots, I'm told a thick paste of baking soda and water spread over the stain, then rubbed with foil works well. I'm trying this on my cooker hood this afternoon and will report back...

I don't think there are rust spots, it is just manky. However, have just been reading about the power of baking soda, so will be interested to hear how you get on.

    Rock and, indeed, roll.

I second BGBs suggestion with the foil, I had rust spots on my chrome spotlights on the 4x4 and rubbed it up with foil, it came up a treat.

Astonish Power Cleaner is great for making manky stainless steel sparkle like new. It's the best I've found so far, either the paste or the powder.

Barkeepers Friend - never known anything like it for cleaning stains off stainless steel, chrome, glass etc. The first time I used it on our kettle and toaster, my husband asked if I'd gone out and bought new ones! It's about £2 but lasts for ages - it's a powder, you rub it in with a damp cloth, then wipe the residue off, and hey presto, shiny!

Update on bicarb/water paste/foil cleaning. It works. Surprisingly well. Takes a bit of effort but most of the rust spots have been removed.
