Can you help - comfy bra needed!

Anna, 17 December, 2022 at 23:34 Posted on Wedding Attire 0 6
Hi all, can anyone advise on bras/shape wear for weddings please?

I find underwire, big back hooks, seams, and lace extremely uncomfortable. I want to look my best but I don’t want the day ruined because I’m squirming around the whole time just waiting to take the thing off!

I’m around a 38 G/H cup so unfortunately can’t get away without one, even though I’m sure my fiancé would be very happy with that 🙃

A lot of dresses have it and the relevant boning built in. Have you got your dress yet? And if so have you spoken to the shop/a seamstress about what kind of support it offers vs what you might need additionally.

What kind of cut of dress is it? Is there any element of it where you’d see a regular bra, and does the bra need to be strapless or low-backed etc.?
Most people that find bra’s uncomfortable are generally wearing the wrong size or style, although apologies if that is a generalised assumption and there’s more to it than that. I’m an f-cup and once I was properly sized, and found the right style of bras (balconettes for example really don’t suit my chest shape and I’m quite a small frame, so I have to be careful how far the sides come up under the armpit area otherwise they dig in), I found them all of sudden a fair bit easier to get on with Smiley smile

Oh that’s good to know, thank you Smiley smile I haven’t got a dress yet so I guess that comes first!

Thank you for the advice about the size, I generally have a problem with any tight clothes - so I think it’s just me being fussy!

Yes definitely don’t worry till you have your dress, and if you are conscious of it then, purposely look for ones with good support and maybe a corset back? Although feel free to see how it goes with a zipper, seamstresses are magicians with making things fit properly.

If you’re struggling with bras feeling tight, it could be a style thing. Balconettes literally mentally feel like they’re crushing my rib cage, I know they’re not, but I can never get comfy in them. The joys now is there’s lots of types and styles out there so a proper dedicated bra shop should be able to help (there’s nothing saying you have to buy from them after all 🤷‍♀️).
Good luck! Have fun dress shopping! 😁

I would get yourself measured properly for the right bra size for a start - if you're not confident doing this yourself, then most shops that sell a lot of lingerie provide a free measuring service. A bra that fits correctly and provides the right support makes the world of difference in day to day clothing, never mind a wedding dress. A poorly fitting bra can cause all sorts of problems like breast pain, back pain, poor posture etc. So your first step is to make sure that it's not incorrect sizing that is causing the problem.

Having said that, if you really hate underwired or strapless bras, then think about what kind of dress you buy. I know how fussy I am about underwear and how much I hate strapless or underwired bras, so I made sure I bought a dress that I could wear with a standard bra!

Many dresses have built-in bras or have the option to have one added. So make sure you discuss the options with the shop attendants when you are trying on dresses. You may find that you feel really comfortable in a dress that has built in support, or you may prefer to pick a style that allows you to wear your own bra underneath.
