can you serve nachos as a main meal?

FTB, 6 June, 2008 at 09:03 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 21

Nacho crisps, beef mince, covered in cheese, sour cream and guacamole?

Doesn't seem like its enough of a meal to me. Am I just being greedy or are they really supposed to be just a starter?

I have seen that served as a main in our local - friend always orders it. I would possibly do a side salad as well, mainly for colour!

If you're going to do the mince beef thing I think tacos would be better.

I've never had nachos as a main meal, only ever as a starter or a shared thing with mates in the pub.

We have nachos when it's just the two of us but not sure I'd serve it to guests as a meal. As HH says, if you're doing mince anyway, why not do tacos? Feels more 'main meal' somehow.

I see nothing wrong with it myself..but then I am a nacho freak ? I would do a salad to go with it, or beans and rice type thing.

However, if peeps were coming to eat, I'd be inclined to put the mince in wraps, place in oven dish with a bit of salsa and grated cheese on top and bake for 15ish mins, then serve with sour cream and guacomole with slaad o the side. One of hubbys favourite meals...and am quite partial to it myself. In fact, was pondering what to do for dinner tonight.....

Trixie wanders off to check contents of fridge and freezer.....

Wanted to add..nothing wrong with tacos but can be messy! Depends on if you want to risk glob of it over you!

I think it really depends on what type of meal it is iyswim. For a dinner party I would probably do what the others have said and go for tacos or a wrap. If it's just friends sitting round 'casually' then it would be fine. I would think of it more as a picky food / nibbles / or a starter. I love nachos (but without the meat - veggie). i even like the nasty ones you get with nasty cheese sauce at the cinema ?

We have chilli nachos as a main meal. Layer nachos, chilli and refried beans. Put grated cheese and pickled jalapenos (optional) on top. Put in the oven for 10-15 minutes. Serve with salad/salsa/guacamole/sour cream - and a big jug of margarhitas!

As a casual meal in front of the TV, say, why not? I wouldn't serve it to guests as a formal meal though, but I wouldn't serve tacos etc in that situation either- to me, all the sort of food is better for soaking up booze as you chat/watch trashy TV etc- it's informal by definition.

Oh yes! Its (one of) our Friday-night-at-home-trashy meal while we watch TV (a Friday night treat as the rest of the week we eat in the dining room).

Only as a trashy meal, with plenty of booze.

It's only permissable if you use chopped habanero and invite me.

I wouldn't call them a main meal, more of a snack or a quick meal if you're in a rush. I might do them for me and Mr Caterpillar but not for friends, unless I was doing them as a starter followed by something else as well.

I have served this before, it was a party, there were only 4 of us and it wasntat all formal

generously cover the bottom of the dish with refried beans then load with nachos then cover with cheese and melt

On the side in bowls serves beef chilli and a bowl of spicy chicken (much like chilli but made with chicken breast diced)

Homemade guacamoule, sour cream, a hot and a mild salsa and a colourfull salad with avacado and a lime dressing

My pet hate. The amount of times I’ve been round to peoples houses and they say “We’re making natchos” or “we’re just doing fahetias”(sp) I hate both, yet they never seem to ask if that’s OK. Greasy mounds of creamy cardboard covered in tasteless crap. Yuk. liek somethign you'd get in whetherspoons.

so no, I'd not have them for anything but certainly not the only food on offer.

Personally I would rather have Enchiladas of Fajitas than Nachos.

? I'm sure nachos speak very highly of you too.

Not something I'd serve to guests tbh.

I'd be miffed if someone served them to me as a dinner if I'd been invited round - a touch lazy and more of a snack food.

Agreeing with everyone who said more as a snack or starter than dinner. I do love them though, especially dipped into chilli con carne with cheese, salsa, guacamole and sour cream. Mmmmm I could eat that now.

I wouldn't serve them up for friends - I hate sharing them!
