Can you trace a Facebook user from a message?

crystal-k, 23 March, 2009 at 09:06 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

I received a message on Facebook yesterday from someone insulting my husband and unborn baby.

I do not recognise the name, neither does my husband or friends and family. I presume it is a made-up name anyway as the user has blocked me from replying or viewing their profile. There isn't a profile picture.

I was wondering whether there is anyway to trace a user from a message? Highly unlikely but I am absolutely fuming even though i know this person is a coward and not worth my worries. Think i read somewhere you can at least find out where the message was sent from ie. where the computer/phone is that was used?

Whilst this is very upsetting for you I think you have to forget it and move on. I don't think you will be able to trace the user, though you could forward the message on to Facebook as a complaint - doubt they will do anything though

That is what I was thinking I should do. Just really frustrating. Feel like I should be trying to defend them both but that will probably lead to more aggravation even if i did work out how to find out who they are.

I'd imagine that facebook have protocols for dealing with stuff like this as I think that police can get involved in cyber-bullying episodes. Report it to facebook - they will be able to trace the IP address that the message was sent from and issue a warning.

Sorry to hear that you are going through this, it can't be v pleasant. My friend had a similar incident and reported it to facebook who did follow up as far as they could (I think they blocked the person's membership or something but that doesn't stop them setting up another a/c on another pc unfortunately). The friend it happened to decided that it was just easier for her to stop using FB as the person involved started to send messages to anyone listed as her FB friends (particularly those with same surname) and she just found it easier.

    Best of luck x

    Thanks for the replies.

So now a WWYD. Would you:

    A) Delete message, try to forget all about it and hope nasty person doesn't bother you again.

    B) Report to Facebook therefore letting sender know it has upset you but stop them from contacting you from that profile again

    C) Continue to try and find out who they are. My friend suggested her new boyfriend logging in and friend requesting (I am not friends him) the person to see if there are any clues on the profile.
