Cancel & Elope?

Lisa, 2 February, 2022 at 19:55 Posted on Planning 0 6
My partner and I are booked in for a small wedding (6 guests) at the end of September this year, followed by a party at the local hall before going on a honeymoon. We've had various issues with the planning process, and I've posted on here before about the slow response times from our venue getting us down, which has been frustrating and taken some of the shine off the process.

I'm finding it hard to be excited when I think of everything we still need to plan and buy, as so much of it centres around my worrying about making other people happy, and coming across hurdles with other vendors.
We had the idea earlier this week to elope just the two of us to Scotland for a humanist wedding which we could then have outdoors, which really appeals to us. We'd lose some deposits but would overall have a saving, and were planning on a honeymoon in Scotland anyway (plus we got engaged there) so it makes sense. Just thinking about this change of plan made me feel excited about the wedding again.
My questions are primarily is this a silly idea (!) but also if anyone has any advice, experience or resources regarding an elopement to Scotland, as I worry about things such as maybe not being able to travel up there before September to check out the location, and won't be able to have a hair/make-up trial, etc.
Any thoughts appreciated!

I don’t think it’s a silly idea at all. A lot of the time I don’t agree with the “it’s your day so whatever you want to do” mentality, but from you’ve described I think the elopement could be a great idea for you. I would recommend giving it a good while to think it over, to make sure it’s not just the novelty of the idea which is exciting you. Also consider your guests and why you wanted them there in the first place - will you be happy without them there on the day or would you miss them? Either is fine, as long as you and your fiancé have thought it through. Good luck with whatever you decide and I hope you enjoy the process, the day, and your married life!

Thank you, that's sensible advise. Guest wise it was always a tricky one, as it was a bit of a mishmash of people, and I've been worrying about how the meal and evening would go without entertainment, and such a small group who largely don't know each other. My only concern now is if things will be booked up for Scotland or if we have time to get it sorted, so will see how that goes!

    Hi
We are going to Gretna Green to get married. It’s been a very simple process so far and when we initially phoned they had a lot of availability. We’ve had to fill in an M10 form which is our notice to get married and that can be sent anywhere between 3-1 months in advance. I sent mine on Monday and received a reply today. When we first booked I had a few questions for the registrar so I contact them via email and they were extremely helpful and prompt at replying.

We are also taking people with us, so you can always ask your guests if they wanted to join you. As we are only uninhabited a few people we were worried about the evening being flat so I have brought table games to keep everyone talking.
We put so much stress on ourselves with all things wedding so if you feel it will minimise the stress then absolutely do it. It’s worth a phone call or two to various places around Scotland to see if they can accommodate you.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do

Thanks Kirsty, we have decided to go ahead with it! My main concerns at this time are whether our humanist ceremony will be legally recognised in England, as well as what to do about hair/makeup as I won't be able to make it up for a trial in advance! But I'm so much more excited now we've made the decision to go for it!

    Hi Lisa
    How exciting!!
I’m not having a hair and make up trial beforehand either. I’ve followed the salons page on insta to kind of get an idea of what what they do. Im afraid I can’t be of any help with regards to the legalities. Good luck with all your planning
