Capsule wardrobe for work

Redbedhead, 13 February, 2009 at 14:34 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

I am looking to get some new clothes for work and don't really want to get too much as I am overweight at the moment and hoping to shift some of it soon. My plan was to get a capsule wardrobe so I can mix and match things. Has anyone done this and can offer any tips as to what worked and what didn't?

I will be working in a reasonably formal environment so it is suits mainly, although trouser suits are acceptable. I am hoping to be able to get away without wearing a suit jacket every day as I am not very comfortable in them. Dresses are a no-no at the moment as I struggle to find anything that covers my norks and doesn't hang like a sack on the rest of me!

Also, how many items did you get? At the moment I have 2 x black trouser suits plus a skirt that goes with both jackets. I think I need another skirt really. I have got 5 tops coming to go under the suit but about 3 of them are black or black and white and I really wanted a bit of colour with the tops so I am going to look for a few more.

Thanks

I bought a couple of plain smart cardigans to wear instead of a suit jacket.

I have a work wardrobe based around black, grey, white and brown so most things go together - I try and find cardigans / knitted type jackets to avoid the need for suit jackets (and I do tend to wear dresses a fair bit but if those are out then I'll ignore)

2 pairs grey trousers (one wide leg, one narrow leg)

    1 pair black trousers

Several white shirts and tshirts (either worn on own or under other tops / jackets)

1 tweedy jacket to throw over everything in case I need a jacket

Brown and grey jumpers / cardigans

    Brown knitted jacket

I then jazz it up with various belt and necklaces (can't stand bracelets at work) to make it look different, e.g. I have a white tshirt under a grey knitted silk shirt tucked into black trousers with a patent belt on. Yesterday I wore a similar top half with wide leg grey trousers and chunky black necklaces

That is what I have done before and am hoping to do again. Just need to find them now!

I know what you mean about uncomfortable jackets, it's been an age since I worked in an office but I always liked to find smart knit type jackets and cardis instead.

Boden may have something and code TYOU will give you £10 off a spend of over £30 plus free delivery and returns.

Thanks TWR. I think it was you who I saw mentioning it before.

Unfortunately dresses are out for the time being until I have lost some weight / lost some norkage.

I don't really wear much white but I think it might be sensible to get some basics in as it does go with everything else. Where do you get your basics like decent white t-shirts / shirts from? I have always struggled to find white t-shirts that aren't too casual / baggy or go a bit see through (which I don't want!).

Boden are quite good (although I tend to avoid because its like a uniform around us), I found some nice stuff in the Jaegar sale and at at Oasis recently

M&S have some nice knitted shirts (silk jersey so nice and warm)

Thanks. I had a quick look there for cardigans but didn't see anything but the code is helpful anyway as H wanted something from there.

I have an order of tops that I am waiting for from M & S as I find their sizes fit me well. I will have a look at the knitted shirts there as well as I didn't think to last time. I wouldn't think to look in Jaeger or Oasis though, so will see what I can find.

RBH, do you want long sleeve T's? If so you need these, which are cut longer and fab for coverage. 2 for £20 using the code can't be bad.

Boring but I go to Next for their work trousers as they do a 'long', and you can buy a size smaller in there too ? I have some nice smart cardies from there too. I wear a coloured t-shirt often (Sainsbugs do nice ones) with black trousers and a smart black cardy. Told you it was boring!

If you're norkalicious you may find shirts a bit difficult...

A smart cardigan can work wonders, and V neck jumpers are also a staple wear in my winter wardrobe.
