Car shopping, which would you go for from Zafira, Meriva and Roomster

Mrs Magic, 7 October, 2008 at 11:57 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

After my DLA award yesterday, I'm car shopping! I'm down to three choices; Vauxhall Meriva, Vauxhall Zafira and Skoda Roomster. Cars to me are functional, they don't excite me really, I'm such a girl. ? My last car was a Meriva and it served my needs well, I could fit the wheelchair in the boot, could get in and out and could drive it easily. The Motability website allows you to compare cars and this is the available choices in our price range (up to £200 for advance payment).

Which one would you go for? Any experiences of the different cars? At the moment, I'm verging to Zafira as even thought the mpg/co2 is the highest out of the choices, the boot is huge (when we travel up to my mum's, all our stuff had to go on back seat of Meriva) and there is the option of the extra seats in the boot if you need to have 7 seats instead of 5. I'll use it for day to day pottering and longish motorway journeys every few months.

I'd go with one of the skodas - very reliable cars.

The lady downstairs from us has one - I'm guessing on the same scheme. The boot is very large and the back seats flip down too.

I'd pick anything that wasn't a Vauxhall lol! (due to past experiences)

? I like your thinking chook! It is a rather cool name and Jeremy Clarkson did say "don't call it ugly, call it quite brilliant".

Thanks laydees, it's good to read some opinions. Allison, I've never actualy seen one in real life (well I should probably say I haven't noticed one! ?) Do they look as ugly as they do in the photos?

Sun, we've didn't have a problem with our Meriva, were we just lucky? What was wrong with yours?

We really liked the VW Touran but that's over £1k advance payment and we just don't have that many speny buttons in the piggy bank for that at the moment!

Do you have to pay tax as the CO2 will determine how much you pay so you'd want to keep that down if you pay.

I would say the 1.2 skoda would be too small an engine for a big car.

I would go for the 1.4 Skoda as I like skodas and as Chicken says Roomster is a good name and is no way associated with those horrible children on the vauxhall adverts.

I wouldnt know what to choose, but my mum has a Ford C-Max on motobility and she fits her wheel chair into the back of it with bags of room to spare, dont know if this is an option for you or not as hers in 2 years old now and she hasnt had a problem with it at all, in fact when she renews the car next year she plans on having another one

Another vote for the Skoda here! I nearly bought a Skoda but went instead for a Honda Jazz.

http://www.skoda.co.uk/ourcars.aspx Have a look at the Roomster, it doesn't look so bad.

I'll be honest, it's not the prettiest car but it's not as bad as the picture makes out. For some reason, the lady (mad margaret as she's affectionately known) keeps mountains of crap in her cars at all times. So I know it has huge storage space!

The zafira used to have the spare wheel under the rear of the car, they were forever getting stolen. I don't know if the design has changed now though.

    Thanks everyone!

GW, we don't have to pay tax, which is great. We get RAC, insurance and all servicing/parts too. It's a fantastic scheme, all that in exchange for £46 a week mobility! We live in a high insurance area so could never afford a decent car otherwise. It costs £600 a month for a 12 year old fiesta!

Thanks WT, the cheapest C Max is coming up at £249 which is a bit much but we could stretch if we loved it, I guess. It's certainly worth a look at!

    Nich, thanks for the link.

Allison, I don't really mind what it looks likes to be honest as long as it meets my needs. It's definitely on the test drive list! I loved the Touran and given VW make Skodas, it sounds promising! I have friends with matching his and hers Fabias and they love them.

Hawhaw, thanks for the tip, I'll check that out!

We have a new Fabia and Roomster and I really like them! I had an old Fabia after I passed my test and 7 years on it's still going strong - my younger sister drives it now. I have an orange Fabia which I love!

The Roomster is great, we have the 1.4, I wouldn't even consider the 1.2, its too big a car to manage on that engine. I use it a lot for work and the back seats come out completely which is really handy for me and the car is comfortable. The old Fabia's were really basic but now most models have air con as standard which makes a big difference. It's a quirky looking car, we have it in the blue colour but we're really happy with it. They are reliable and we've never had any major problems and any of the minor ones got sorted out really quickly.

BTW, you can fit 34 children in a Roomster all lying flat and one driving. Apparently the local showroom did it as a competition when the car came out.

I haven't had a meriva, I had an Agila as a hire car once, it was shockingly awful and very tinny.

I have however had an Astra, no, two astras and a corsa and they were all sh1ter than a sh1te thing on a sh1te day and we vowed we'd never buy another. They are quite cheap in comparison to other brands, for what you get but I think there's a reason for that, it's because they're sh1te lol!
