Cat question (Ragdoll / Maine coon)

Chelsea Dagger, 3 December, 2008 at 09:52 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

Hi, I wonder if someone here would be able to help me...

We've got three cats, have had for years, and volunteer for our local cats protection, so usually I'm pretty good with most things feline related...but my knowledge on pedigree breeds is very limited, as we deal mainly with "moggies", though I seem to remember there are a few hitchers who know a thing or two about pedigrees.

Coming into care today (and I will be fostering) is a little kitten who is apparently a maine coon and ragdoll cross breed. Now I know a little about ragdolls, that they are very laid back and don't usually go outside because of their trusting nature (is that right?). Obviously I will assess the little mite when it gets here but does anybody much else about characteristics of the breed(s)?

Would we be looking for an indoor only home for this kitten? Or would they be alright in a home say with a cat flap and a chance to explore a quiet garden too?

Any advice appreciated...as I say...I know very little about these breeds.

Thanks

I think you are going to have to 'wait and see' on whether this kitten with need an indoor or outdoor life.

Maine Coons love the outdoors and to hunt so an indoor life doesn't really suit them whereas a Ragdoll is very much an indoor loving cat. So it will totally depend on how much of characteristics of the two breeds it has taken on.

But to add......want to see pictures very soon ?

    I neeed it!

these people are good, someone there might be able to give you a bit more on care but as has been said it will need proper grooming. I can't see why it'd have to be an indoor cat though

Thanks guys....yes I have been reading up on size and stuff, so am prepared for that...I guess I'll just wait and see!

As a rule, we don't rehome kittens from our CP over the Xmas period anyway if we can help it because of the possibility of them becoming presents that one day make their way back to us. So it'll be a long term foster and hopefully in that time I'll get to know exactly what kind of home he'll need.

We've only had a few pedigrees in before and they are usually found homes through one of the fosterers personally ( a family member or close friend) as again we're a bit wary of taking them to homing shows where they will obviously get a lot of attention due to their beauty but will totally overshadow some of the other moggies who desperately need a home too.

I will do my best to take some pics tonight, I'm picking him up around 8.

I'm secretly hoping that he will get on with my three enough to stay as I've desperately wanted another cat for a long time to make it "even numbers" but there are already two boys in the house and a little girl cat and so it will totally depend on a number of factors...but with how it'll affect the dynamics of our already estabalished family is right at the top!

I don't know much about ragdolls, but an ex work colleague of mine had a Maine Coon. He was a beautiful cat - absolutely huge, though, and needed a lot of attention and affection. He made odd noises - almost as if he was trying to 'talk' rather than miaow. I don't know if that's a characteristic of the breed or just that particular cat.
