Cat spayed today - hates her collar - help!

badkitti*, 25 February, 2009 at 17:36 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

Can anyone give advice - she is coming slowly round from the anesthetic but hates the collar and is trying to leap around to scratch it off.

Will she adjust or should i take it off, and then she won't adjust. I don't want her pulling her stitches but then don't want her hurting herself while she is desperate to get the collar off.

Ours just got used to the collar - I would leave it on if you can as they make such a mess pulling their stitches out.

Keep her quiet and reassure her - it must be scarey having something strange just around your head!

When mine were spayed they had a massive plaster around their middle so there was no need for a collar, is there anyway you can do that?

The only time I've neeed a collar on one was for 2 weeks when she's ripped the skin off her toes and wouldn't stop trying to pull the bandage off, she just moaned and slept for the whole time. Hopefully yours will get used to it if she doens't have the plaster option.

    Thanks,

Its just the violence of her trying to pull itmoff her neck. I'll persevere as there is no plaster option, but she's dazed now so worried she'll be worse later. she does eventually settle after a soothe

Seen some sites saying take it off if she won' eat ( no food til tomorrow anyways) but I'll contact the vet in the morning if she continues.

Poor girl - and poor boy too - he was neutered today too, but he doesn't get a collar

I've had 2 girls spayed and 4 boys castrated. Non of them had plasters or collars and they were all ok. Non had infections or any other problems. Normally that night after any operation they just want to sleep. It sounds like she's going through an awful lot of effort to get it off, rather than just relaxing.

My little girl didn't need a collar or anything, i think they gave us one just in case. I had to put one on my boy as he had a hernia fixed aand was worrying the stiches, but my girl didn't bother.

Neither my girl or boy had collars or anything after they were done. We just kept and eye on them to make sure they weren't fiddling with their stiches. Neither of them did though.

When I had my cat spayed she ripped her stiches out twice and I had to take her back to the vet's each time (it was horrible), then he put in staples and said there was no way she would get them out but they were out before I even got her home in the car. In the end the vet had her back in and kept her for two nights, slightly sedated, until she began to heal and stopped ripping at the stitches, cost me a fortune!! I'm not telling you that to make you panic but just to say it can happen so if you take the collar off you need to keep a close eye on her just in case. Good luck, hope you have a well behaved kitty who doesn't do silly things like mine did.

Florence had to have a collar when she was neutered and she loathed it. She was picking at her staples though and one got infected so it had to stay. If you take it off and she leaves the stitches alone I'd say she'll be ok without it.

Poor kitty, it's harder on the girls.

    Thanks all

she is spending more time today concentrating on not walking into things, rather than clawing her collar off. Porr girl - the boy is up and about already.

Poor cat. I sympathise - one of my dogs had an operation last week and has been in a lampshade for the last ten days. I think he's fed up with wearing it - he looks a bit depressed today. Happily his stitches are being taken out today so hopefully he's out of the lampshade.

I sympathise. Our dog had to wear lampshade after an op and he managed to eat his way out of it in the night! After his more recent 21-staple op, he had another lampshade the sise of a small planet! We arranged things so we were with him as much as possible - so he could be lampshadeless. He only had it put on at night and he seemd much happier that way. He was very pleased whenh he didn't have to wear it any more, though!
