Catholic bride - non religious groom

Catalina, 9 September, 2022 at 22:03 Posted on Planning 0 3
Hello everyone!

As you can read in the title my fiancé is non religious and I’m catholic, he wants to honour my religion and I’m happy for that! But I don’t know what are the steps to get married in the Catholic Church I’m the UK.
Im baptised and I did my holy communion but I don’t have the confirmation. Does anyone know1. How long is the confirmation course?2. Can I get married in the Catholic Church if my groom is non religious? 3. How much does the Catholic Church marriage will cost?
Thank you!

Hi! Congratulations! So confirmation courses usually start around now and last until Easter, with confirmations often at the Easter Vigil service in larger churches, but to find out more, just ask your priest. They might be able to do a 1-2-1 course if you're on a shorter timescale.

If your FH is baptised in any Christian denomination, you can have a normal wedding Mass/service, and if they're not baptised you can still have your wedding in a catholic church, it just is viewed as 'non-sacramental'. Catholic weddings vary in cost. You'll have to attend a marriage preparation course with your FH which usually has a donation or fee attached, and then you pay the church a fee/donation for the wedding, as well as for the music. Also, your priest doesn't personally receive any money for doing the wedding, so often people give him some money too but that's a personal choice. All these costs vary from church to church. Mine is costing around £500 for reference, but I'm sure they can cost much more or less. Hope this helps!

I would talk to the priest of the church you want to get married in. He is the best person to advise on costs, and also on what he expects you and your OH to do in order to be married.

I'm not religious and my FH is catholic. We are getting married in the church he went to all his life and it's very sentimental to him and his catholic family. As mentioned above, we have to do a marriage preparation course beforehand and my mum has to write a letter to say that I haven't been married before (because he was baptised, christened and confirmed in that church they have evidence that he hasn't been married before).

Our service costs £250, but will probably be a bit more with donations to the organist and the priest himself. When we went to our first meeting with the priest he was so lovely and made me feel so welcome despite not being religious. My FH had to sign a form because it's classed as a multi-religious wedding that said he will put catholocism first unless it would come between our marriage but i'm not sure if that is specific to the parish.
