Catholic Service - no mass

suitably sparkley, 29 April, 2008 at 10:53 Posted on Planning 0 5

Is anyone having a Catholic Wedding without Mass? If so can I ask to see what your order of service is like?

My OH isn't Catholic and my priest has suggested we have the wedding wihtout mass, but I've never been to a wedding where there wasn't mass!

What format should it take?!
?

    Hello

I am having this too as I am not a catholic but my H2B and my 2 kids are. We could have had a mass but the Priest wasd worried that it may cause a 'religious divide if his family went up for Communion while mine just sat there so I do understand

Anyway you didn't ask that though did you??!!

I have just finished my 4 sessions of wedding preparation and they gave me a document that might help you but I am in work and it is at home.

If you would like to PM me I will scan it in and send it to you. Altough it isn't an order of service, it does tell you what should bne in one for a non-mass catholic service (it tells you the Mass version too just in case you change your mind

    Hello,
Sorry if this is a bit late, but we've just another meeting with our lovely priest so I've just been thinking about this!

    We're having

    Walking in.
    Priest Welcoming everyone
    Hymn 1
    Reading 1 (Song of Songs)
    Reading 2 (non religious)
    Gospel (Mark 10: 6-9)
    Homily/Lecture
    Responsorial Psalm
    Another hymn
    Bidding Prayers
    SIgning of Register
    Yet another hymn
All walk out and live happily ever after

Some of these maybe slightly in the wrong order(and I suppose getting married should feature in there, but I'm not sure where), but that's all the element's we're having!

    Ali x

Hiya, sorry i dont have an order of service as havent fully discussed it yet but we are just having the marriage ceremony and not full mass as h2b is not catholic and doesnt feel that comfortable about the whole communion part.

It will probably last around 30 mins doing it this way.xxx

Thanks everyone. Seems your reasons are the same as mine. It would seem strange for half the congregation to go to communion while the other half sat just looking on.

Thanks for the offer haltonmummy, but it seems PM on here doesn't work for me for some reason!

In the modern era, non Catholics who have been "confirmed" can also take mass at a Catholic service. It is also ok for non Catholics to go up to the priest and ask for a blessing without taking the communion. The person declines the wafer by putting their hands together in prayer fashion, and the Priest will make a sign of the cross and bless them. I have been at literally dozens of weddings where this has been the norm.

This way it is inclusive to both C of E and Catholics (and others too)

    Hope this is of use
