Cats not coming home - how long before you wory

NumbNuts, 24 October, 2008 at 09:42 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 20

I haven't seen my adult cat now for about 2 or 3 days (can't remember which morning I actually last saw her). A neighbour thinks he saw her 2 days ago, but can't be sure of the day either.

I am kind of worried, however, she's gone for a couple of days before, but normally one of H or I see her briefly in between. Next door is having building work done, and I think it originally scared her from coming in.

She's just about getting on with the kittens ok now, she'll almost let them share her food bowl (or her theirs)!

Honestly? In my house I worry if the cats aren't in the house when I come downstairs in the morning - and I'll call them in from outside if necessary. But that's because that's their routine - they are both always around in the morning, and in the evening when I get home from work.

As yours is more independent I'd probably start worrying now - and I'd certainly be outside shaking the food bowl and calling etc. But then I am neurotic ?

WBS. Frankie is always at in the same place (on the other side of a tiny gate, pretending he can't jump it even though he got there in the first place) every morning and if he's not there, we worry.

    I hope she's hope soon. ?

I would start worrying too. Our cat sometimes isn't seen for a couple of days at a time but at the beginning of July she went missing and turned up 6 weeks later ?

When she initially went I went round to almost everyone in the surrounding area as there are a few farms and plenty of outbuildings she could have got locked in. I then put posters up around the village and at the shop and called the RSPCA to see if anyone had taken her there.

Not even a sniff of her for 6 weeks and then 1 night she just strolled back in, a little skinnier and acting extremely strange but she's absolutely fine now. I try to keep her in at night but she's having none of it ?

Hope your cat turns up soon x

I would be worried if I didn't see our cat after about 3 hours ? but then she's a scaredy cat and doesn't normally venture any further than next door's garden. Also she's always shut inside overnight.

In your position I'd probably do what Boop suggests. Hope your cat comes back soon ?

I don't really know how cats work, but I really hope she comes home soon- sounds like she could have been spooked by the building work- maybe wait until there's a quiet time whe she's less likely to be spooked and then go out shaking your biscuit box. ?

I worry if Alfie isn't there in the morning in his usual place or sitting on the doorstep when I ge home from work. However my old cat Bud used to go on adventures for 4/5 days at a time. I hope your cat comes home soon ?

Our tom cat will go off on 4/5 day wanderings, sometimes we'll see him around, other times we won't, he always turns up eventually. Normally on a Wednesday because the bin men come on Tuesday mornings, so he's very hungry by Wednesday after having his food source taken away (I really wish he wouldn't do this because he has a really sensitive stomach and can't even have wet food without getting the squits!)

Our female cat on the other hand won't go further than the back garden, will occasionally venture out onto the front step, but only for seconds before running back in and is inside every night.

If your cat has gone wandering before then she'll probably turn up soon. However, if you're worried (which you obviously are) then start making some phone calls. Good place to start is your nearest vets who will be able to tell you if anyone has found a cat fitting her description and also put up a "missing notice" for you as well as being able to provide you with phone numbers for rspca, and local animal charities

    Hope she turns up soon

I worry for ours if it gets to 24 hours as that is his normal 'going out' time.

I would go round all the neighbours and ask each if they have seen her or to check sheds, garages etc. If someone definately saw her say yesterday then you will feel better. If not, then put ppsters through doors as far as you can, all the surrounding roads etc, they can travel further than we think.

    Hope she turns up soon

With my little girl, I'd worry if she wasn't in the shed lol (she can get in but not out, and automatically defaults to 'enter shed mode' if the back door is locked!), But my little boy (my avatar) he can go missing for days, usually about day three is when I worry, but I always seem to 'know' if he's in trouble, for example when I moved to my mams, he went missing for a week, got himself lost and couldn't find his way home after escaping, I wasn't particularly bothered as such, I knew he was ok, and sure enough I found him and brought him home, whereas just before Christmas I hadn't seen him for a day and I knew something was wrong and it was, nothing major and he's fine now, but I think about three days before I worry.

Practically, I'd call the vets and the dog warden, the local shelters and the mircochip company (if she's chipped), they will all keep an eye out, also let your pet insurance company know, as they can help with costs for lost posters etc. But the best thing you can do is go out looking yourself, call for her and make a complete fool of yourself wandering the streets, yelling your head off. My little boy heard me and let me know where he was so I could 'rescue' him, he was only one street away bless 'im!

She'll be in someone's home alright - the question is whose (H has caught her going from one to another one morning). I suppose I better go round and admit the greedy white cat is mine, and have they seen her!

Thanks for replying, I do worry (and have checked the outhouse, she often sneaks in behind you), but know she's fiercly independent (and greedy) so will wander

I too would be worrying by now but our cats are mainly house ones and only venture out normally for an hour or two on a weekend.

I have my fingers crossed that she turns up soon probably without a worry in the world and maybe a bit fatter!

Saffy doesnt have a routine really and comes and goes as she pleases - but i would be bothered if i hadnt seen her for a day at some point

she did disappear for 4 nights once and i was really really worried - i am still sure one of the little old ladies round us had kept her in and was trying to make her love them more

she was very well fed and desperate to go wandering!

if yours is a free spirit and likes mooching round the neighbours i would try not to worry too much and assume she has her nose out of joint with the building and kittens

really hope she is home soon ?

She's still not home ☹️ - I've walked up and down the road shaking food, calling her name, spoken to neighbours who've all checked garages and outbuildings, so next step posters and phoning vets.

There's no sign of her being run over/hit by a train, so I'm still hopeful (wondering if one of her other houses have locked her in over fireworks period), but equally worried that someone may have accidently locked her in somewhere
