Ceremony Music - Harp?

Moonbeam88, 14 March, 2016 at 16:41 Posted on Planning 0 9

We were planning on having the organ for our church ceremony however when we last visited the church there was mention that the organ had been playing up (it's electric). We heard a harpist at a wedding fair on Sunday and the music sounded so beautiful and romantic so we are now considering having this instead....what do people think? As it's a church we can't really have a normal song playing as there is no sound system, what live music do you think works best?

Has anybody else had a harpist for a church ceremony? Did you have the harp play the hymns - did this work OK? Also i'm struggling to find a recessional song to walk out to for the harp - it's hard to find something more upbeat!!

Any help / opinions would be much appreciated!!

Thanks Smiley smile

I think a harpist would be beautiful - they should also be able to advise you on what songs would be best to have playing throughout different parts of your ceremony.

We are getting married in a hotel and I'm walking down to a classical piece called "River Flows in you" by Yiruma, its usually played on piano but I've just you tubed it and it can be played on the harp - worth a listen x

We're having a harpist for our church ceremony- it's actually my cousin who's a bit of a prodigy (she really is!!). We're not having her play the hymns though as I think it can be drowned out by the singing. When we've been at church before, they've actually had a cd playing the organ music through the sound system and you can barely tell the difference except for the fact that nobody is sitting at the organ!

We're having Here Comes The Sun by the Beatles for our recessional- it sounds lovely on the harp.

We are having a harp and violin to walk down the aisle to and afterwards whilst our guests mingle and we have our photos taken (wedding is in Italy).

They sent us a list of songs but I have also requested a ceremony song, our first dance song and 2 others that I wanted played. I think they sound beautiful and so romantic.

We have Ho Hey by the Lumineers, Love Story by Taylor Swift and Marry Me by Train.

We had a harpist and it was lovely! It was a while ago now but I remember her being quite pricey, but worth it :-)

We have booked a Harpist for the drinks reception, I did consider it for the ceremony but my heart is set on a song so I chose to book it will the guests mingle and while we have our photos taken! I think it will create a lovely atmosphere. The harpist is charging us £175 for one hour.

I have a string trio and they are charging £670 for three hours to play for the ceremony and drinks reception. They did give me a £100 discount though as they usually charge £770. I got a quote from another string trio who quoted £595. They're not amplified though as I was worried that they wouldn't be loud enough as our drinks reception is being held on a large lawn with a lake. Our trio includes a violinist, a cellist and a guitarist so we can have more upbeat songs too.

Have you tried going onto You Tube to find harpist solo songs? I am walking down the aisle to Canon in D by Pachelbel. I'm not sure what my recessional will be yet. At the moment, I like the idea of Happy Together by The Turtles X

Thanks for everyone's advice! I think i'm going to book her! Listened to a few songs on YouTube and i quite like Rather B - Clean Bandit to go out to or here come's the sun as somebody else suggested.

Just got to decide now if it'll be strong enough to cope with the hymns or if we need to pay for organist also. Just seems a lot to pay an extra £100 for him just to play two hymns

    Update....

Decided we wanted the harp and would cancel the organist altogether BUT told the Vicar and she has said no we can't cancel him as that is how he makes his living?! I find this a bit annoying. Yes I understand it's not great for him but we only said we'd have him two months ago (wasn't made clear this was set in stone at this point) and our wedding isn't for another 5 months. Obviously I can't say anything as I don't want bad feeling with the Vicar but we are paying a lot for this wedding and would have liked all the choices to be our own, including the music. So now it seems too much money to justify the harp as well as an organist we don't really want. boo Smiley sad

    sorry rant over!

Booo! Is this in your contract? Do check, just in case! I know he has to make his living... But so does everyone and every vendor could say that to you!
