Ceremony Readings

HappyPinkCars361, 9 July, 2015 at 13:19 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hello!

Im getting married in August and struggling to find a reading for my brother to read, does anyone know of any nice scottish readings?

I am thinking about this:

1) ‘Freedom and Love’ Thomas Campbell

How delicious is the winning
Of a kiss at love's beginning,
When two mutual hearts are sighing
For the knot there's no untying!
Ye remember, 'midst your wooing,
Love has bliss, but Love has ruing;
Other smiles may make you fickle,
Tears for other charms may trickle.

Love he comes, and Love he tarries,
Just as fate or fancy carries;
Longest stays, when sorest chidden;
Laughs and flies, when press'd and bidden.

Bind the sea to slumber stilly,
Bind its odour to the lily,
Bind the aspen ne'er to quiver,
Then bind Love to last for ever.

Love's a fire that needs renewal
Of fresh beauty for its fuel:
Love's wing moults when caged and captured,
Only free, he soars enraptured.

Can you keep the bee from ranging
Or the ringdove's neck from changing?
No! nor fetter'd Love from dying
In the knot there's no untying.

But i know nothing about poetry and im not sure if its nice or actually not so nice?! xxx

    The idea in the final verse seems to be of the freedom of love being like the dove and the bee. You can't stop the bird from changing or the bee from flying around, or 'fettered love from dying' i.e. you can't stop love in chains from dying. So if you read it that 'the knot there's no untying' (marriage, tying the knot) is trapping love then it will die.

    If it was me I'd read the poem but miss the last verse as all the other sentiments about it are lovely.

    I think it's a lovely piece of writing but the last verse makes it negative to me, like freedom is stronger than the love?

    What about Edwin Morgan's Love:

    Love rules. Love laughs. Love marches. Love is the wolf that guards the gate. Love is the food of music, art, poetry. It fills us and fuels us and fires us to create. Love is terror. Love is sweat. Love is bashed pillow, crumpled sheet, unenviable fate. Love is the honour that kills and saves and nothing will ever let that high ambiguity abate. Love is the crushed ice that tingles and shivers and clinks fidgin-fain for the sugar-drenched absinth to fall on it and alter its state. With love you send a probe So far from the globe No one can name the shoals the voids the belts the zones the drags the flares it signals all to leave all and to navigate. I'm considering it for ours. But can I ask why not Burns? I love a burns poem! There are loads of them - not just the really well known ones. It's worth looking into some of them. But then I love Burns (and am definitely having one of his poems at ours lol!) so I would say that! PS - no idea what's going on with the formatting of my post! Sorry - hope it's readable haha!

    O This Is No My Ain Lassie - it's a song so there's a chorus bit which makes it quite long but it's beautiful

    On Wedding Rings - it's really short but if you're having gold wedding rings it's very sweet

    Lassie Wi' The Lint-White Locks - again this is a song and might not be relevant (like if you're a brunette or red-head haha)

    The Blue-Eyed Lassie - same as the last one haha!

    It depends what you want out of Burns though - a lot of his really lovely love poems are about a specific woman so it depends if you want that in your ceremony or not. Don't feel I'm pushing Burns btw - I totally love him but it's not for everyone. I don't want the same as everyone else as well - I like being different - so I can see not wanting the more well known ones. Your best bet is just to Google love poems (or Scottish love poems if you want that specifically) until you hit on one you like.

    I was going to suggest Edwin Morgan too, beautiful poem. Have you thought about a Celtic blessing rather than a poem? It's not exactly Scottish but it is beautiful

    May the road rise up to meet you.
    May the wind be always at your back.
    May the sun shine warm upon your face;
    the rains fall soft upon your fields
    and until we meet again,
    may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

    Or a bit more lighthearted than you might want but have you heard Don't squeeze my shoes by Scottish poet Rachel Fox
    Don't squeeze my shoes
    A love, like shoes, must feel just right
    Not too loose and not too tight
    Not too high or far too low
    And if you're young have room to grow
    It must look good with any clothes
    It must be kind, not pinch your toes
    It must last well and not wear through
    It must be just the thing for you
    The style you choose, however strange
    Must show ability to change
    To cope with rains and frosty morns
    To help you dodge bunions and corns
    Your love must fit and not break banks
    It must not always expect thanks
    It should be happy being there
    The chosen one, the happy pair

    Thanks!

    I have decided to go with burns An I’ll Kiss thee yet, yet by Robert Burns, adapted to a reading.....

    When in my arms, wi' a' thy charms
    I clasp my countless treasure
    I seek nae mair o' Heav'n to share
    Than sic a moment's pleasure

    Ilk care and fear, when thou art near
    I ever mair defy them
    Young kings upon their hansel throne
    Are no sae blest as I am

    And by thy e'en, sae bonie blue
    I swear I'm thine for ever
    And on thy lips I seal my vow
    And break it shall I never
