Ceremony Too Short?

Hayley, 3 September, 2022 at 19:05 Posted on Planning 1 8

For anyone who didn't have readings in your civil ceremony, how long did your ceremony take? We are working on our ceremony pack and have decided we don't want any readings but I'm wondering whether the ceremony will feel too short without them?

We are choosing some of the shorter options for our bits during the ceremony because I struggle with public speaking and I'm worried about the registrar making me repeat something because I've stumbled over the words and not said it good enough to be legally binding.

As we not going to be saying a lot and there will be no readings, I'm not sure if it's all going to be done in 5 minutes?

It'll be a little bit longer than just the vows, as the registrar usually welcomes people, congratulates you at the end of the vows, then you have to sign the register. If you're worried about stumbling over your words, just have a quiet word with him/her beforehand and ask them to 'feed' you your vows in short phrases. The minister did that at our wedding because I was worried about the same thing, and it made it so much easier.

    Hi Hayley
We get married at the end of the month and during our meetings with the minister she has said she will gives us four words at a time to repeat after her. She has given us a copy of the vows so we can practice them in advance of the big day.
My FH and I don't really like alot of attention and he is also very worried about forgetting his words or stumbling over them.If you are really worried though I would suggest you ask your registrar/minister for a copy of the vows so you can practice.
Try not to worry too much though as I'm sure it will be one of the best days ever ❤️

That's a good idea, I'll make a note to remind myself to discuss it during our interview with the registrar before the ceremony.

Thank you, when we send the ceremony plan back I will ask if the registrar can send us their script before the day. I don't know what order they will do things either so if they could send in advance then that will help my need to have everything planned to the letter.

I usually count on timings being you will be outside with a drink in your hand in 30 mins with or without a reading. Readings do not add much time because the registrar will alter and shorten their part. Registrars are very good at gently spreading out the ceremony when needed so it is not over in 5 mins.

They are also very good at calming any nerves and give out the words a few at a time - they will not let you get the words wrong causing it to not be legally binding, they just get you to repeat it again, I would say it happens at about 70% of weddings I see.

We chose short and sweet, no readings either. When you speak to your registrar they'll explain the process and let you know how long they expect it to be (ours is meant to be 15/20 mins as it's so basic). Hope that helps!
