Ceremony walk through?

Sam, 20 May, 2021 at 15:29 Posted on Planning 1 12
Hi all, we were just recapping our checklist and the question of a practice run with the registrar came up. I didn’t think this was common practice but my fiancé thought it was.

I’ve since read you can ask to do one and depending on registrar and venue you may be able to.
Have any of you done this and was it worth while? Trying to work out if it will be necessary or not

Yes, the best thing to do is to communicate with your venue and registrar.

I would say it can't hurt.
I'm having a church wedding and planning on inviting my photographer so he can see where is best to take photos .
I always would like a practice run as it would be good to know in advance where we sit , where we go...... I know my sister had a practice run and only had it cause my dad asked . She was so glad he did as no one had a clue where to stand/sit.

Yes, will ask them if we think it’s necessary. Just wondering how common it is and if it’s needed. Especially as a lot or our wedding party will be travelling for the wedding it won’t be very easy to arrange

Ok that’s interesting, can see why it would help. Last wedding I was a bridesmaid at we were given instructions but no prior run through and it made sense but would have been more relaxed if wasn’t trying to remember and figure out where to go in the moment!
Was that a full run through with the registrar or just with the venue? That’s the bit I’m most unsure whether it’s needed for, having a registrar to do a full run through too or just venue for where to stand etc

She had a full run through I think in her church with her vicar.

I don't think it's a requirement, but if you, your fiancé or any of your wedding party suffer with anxiety I think it would be a good idea. X

Oh good point. We don’t but both of my bridesmaids do. Maybe I’ll see how they feel about it and decide whether it’s something that would benefit them too. Thanks

I think the run through with all the wedding party is standard for a church wedding but not for civil/registrar weddings,

Yesterday ahead of my tasting I took my photographer and florist to the venue so that we could speak/run through/make final selections incl deciding on an aisle shape in conversation with the venue co-ordinator. This has put my mind at ease. On the day the co-ordinator will make sure the kids get down the aisle. Abs their parents will be sat on the row I want the kids to sit on for the ceremony.
When I’ve been a bridesmaid at a hotel venue as long as you are taken to the start of the aisle it’s pretty self explanatory where you are walking to then the registrar calls you up by reading or name when it’s time for you to speak.
    Good luck ladies

Its very common for a Church wedding and is referred to as a rehearsal and is usually done in the week of the wedding. It shouldn't be necessary for a photographer to go along unless they have very limited experience of shooting a Church wedding.

A practice run through in person with an actual registrar is not something that I have ever known to be done.

What happens on the day of the wedding when you are both interviewed is that the ceremony is run through with you then. Its easy for me to say but there really isn't much to it as the registrar prompts you throughout the ceremony.

Seating wise the bridesmaid's will usually get to the top of the isle and have a seat on the front row, same for whoever is walking you down the isle.

Speak to your venue coordinator as they will know the exact procedure for their venue. Sometimes at venue wedding fayres I see future brides and their bridesmaids having a little practice down the isle for timings. Or if I am early for a wedding before anyone arrives I sometimes see that venues will use that days wedding set up to do show arounds.

It's very common with a church wedding but I've never heard of a run through for a civil wedding before. If it would make you feel more comfortable on the day, then go for it, but it's not strictly necessary.

We didn't have a rehearsal for our church wedding (we got married immediately post first lockdown so there wasn't time), and it was all ok on the day.

Yes that’s what I thought but my other half seemed to think it was standard for ceremony too and since researching and seeing it was an option was intrigued to know if was worth while! Think you’re right that it’s usually pretty self explanatory, especially as ours will be very straight forward outside ceremony! Thanks for your thoughts
