Hi, we’re getting married in portugal next May and we have been asked to obtain a Certificate of no impediment, or the ceremony will not be legal. our local registry office will not issue one as the Gov website states that you do not require one for Portugal! Any ideas what we can do??

I had to do something similar when I got married in Jamaica at the end of 2023. The positive was the wedding coordinator sent me the form to complete, and I had to use a notary in the U.S. to verify all our documents, and we had to submit certified copies of each document. Since Portugal is a little different, they require your documents to be certified in their country, so your best bet is to get a wedding planner in Portugal to assist you.

A Certificate of No Impediment in Portugal is an important legal document often required for marriage or residency applications. Interestingly, just like how this certificate verifies your legal standing for personal matters, ISO certification Australia serves a similar purpose for businesses — proving their compliance, credibility, and readiness to operate globally. Both documents act as trusted validations, ensuring smooth international processes, whether personal or professional. By securing ISO certification Australia, companies gain the same level of recognition and confidence that individuals achieve with official certificates abroad.

Hi Rachel, this can be a confusing situation, but you’re not alone—many couples face similar issues when marrying abroad. While the UK government states that a Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) isn’t officially required for Portugal, some Portuguese registry offices still request it as part of their local compliance checks. If your local registry won’t issue one, you can request an official letter or statutory declaration from a solicitor or notary public confirming that there’s no legal obstacle to your marriage. This document is often accepted as an equivalent. Think of it like compliance inspection services , where specific verification is needed even if not universally required—Portugal’s local authorities simply want assurance of your legal eligibility to marry.
