Charity Collection at Reception - poss sens

bec84, 31 March, 2009 at 17:44 Posted on Planning 0 5

Hi, don't know what you guys will think of this, but will risk it anyway!

My gran passed away from Cancer, and was cared for by a local hospice for a short time before she died. At the reception, I was considering having a collection box at the bar for people to donate their change into for the Hospice, as I was very close to her and there will be a big gap there on my wedidng day.. I'm not sure how to do this so I acknowledge that its in memory of my Gran, Any ideas?

I think this is a lovely idea. Do the hospice have any charity pins or something in which you could have on display?

What about getting someone to mention it in the wedding speeches about how sadly your Gran wasn't here for the wedding but in her memory you have a candel lit and you would be grateful if anyone would like to make a small donation to this wonderful hospice.

Other than that you could maybe have it set up that instead of wedding presents people could opt to donate to the hospice, or if the hospice had little badges you could buy these and give them out as favours.

We did a bucket collection at the bar - but we had a free bar so the deal was get your free drink and put a donation in the bucket - we raised nearly a grand ...

Hubby mentioned it in his speech, and I designed a nice sign to make sure our evening guests also knew what it was all about ....

It didn't quite have the same sensitivity around it as we picked two charities we wanted to raise money for, rather than it being family related, but you don't have to go into lots of detail if you don't want too, just say you're raising money for a hospice who you really want to support... most folk will probably realise what its related to ...

Good luck - I think its a great idea.

    Hi,

I work for a charity and we have done a number of different things for weddings, quite often we give out collection boxes with daffodil pin badges or we have special wedding donation envelopes (that also have space on the back for the donor to write their details on so that we can claim gift aid if theya re tax payers-28p back for the goverement for every £1 donated so very worthwhile!). You could put a poster up (above the collection) or a leaflet with the donation envelopes with some nice words and/or a picture (the charity might even do this for you).

I have also been to a wedding where they have had one of those picture tree things that you can clip photos to, and they cliped photos of loved ones that had passed away. I thought at the time it was a really nice way to include them in the wedding too (almost like they were there), i think this was on the presents table too so this might work quite nicely.

Hope this helps, it's a lovely thing you're doing

Thanks....wasn't sure how it would go down as an idea! I'm glad you don't think its bad!

Think I will get in touch with the Hospice, in particular the collection box and envelope idea and see what we can come up with, and take it from there.

    Thanks again. xx

    Hi there

I think this is a lovely idea! We are setting up a charity Just Giving website for our gift list for guests to donate to rather than buy presents - I wanted a Wii Fit but OH isn't 'bending the knee'? I get to organise everything else to do with the wedding so I'm not that bothered. We don't have any room for more stuff and thought this would be a nice idea.

I like the photo tree idea, I think it would be really nice.
