Charity Wedding Favours

becs1975, 29 August, 2012 at 19:08 Posted on Planning 0 16

Stumbled across this

http://giveincelebration.cancerresearchuk.org/wedding-favours

and wondered if anyone else had done/ was planning on doing this and how it went down. I think we will definitely be doing it, kind of as a way of acknowledging my other halfs parents who both passed from cancer.

Wondering whether to do some sweeties or similar too.

We had Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research pins, which also doubled up as our placecards. As far as I can tell they went down well - lots of people put them on at least! We had so much sweet stuff in our wedding breakfast that I think the traditional sweets/chocs/sugared almonds would just have been a waste.

I think its a nice gesture to donate to charity (I donate to cancer charities myself for similar reasons as yourself) but I wouldn't want charity favours and don't know how I would feel if I received a charity badge at a wedding. Only because of the simple fact I get hassled on average about 8 times a day to and from work (and during my lunch break) by charity workers touting for donations and I have really started to resent having charity pushed on me.

I think if it is a charity that people know means something to you as a couple then go for it.

We had our entire wedding list with Oxfam Unwrapped, so our gifts were things like goats, seeds, teachers, a child's education etc, etc. Just waiting to hear the full tally of what was bought now - should know next week.

We had huge support and loads of positive comments for doing this. However, when you live together and earn money, it's not that hard a decision!

We're having charity favours from the RSPCA as we are both obsessed with animals, especially dogs. My dog is a rescue and we love her to bits so we felt it was right to give something back on our Wedding day ? They're going to be pins on little cards which double as place cards.

No objection to charity badges as favours (unless it was a particularly bizarre choice, Guns For All or something). Really dislike the message that sometimes accompanies them, saying that a donation has been made on my behalf. I choose which charities I give money to, not you!

Were having the cancer research ones, in fact I've just attached the pins to the cards!

Both our families have been touched by cancer, and we thought at least if they get left behind like a lot of favours do the money wont have been wasted!

We are making a donation to the Poppy Appeal and our ushers will be handing out poppies to our guests, we get married the day before Remembrance Day so we thought we'd do something good for the soul.

That's a good point. I might use the place card idea instead of saying a donation has been made.

We have pin badges on a card saying a donation has been given on your behalf to the Sue Ryder Hospice where my OH Mum sadly died earlier this year.. it is our way of her being with us... hoping everyone will wear them.

On a different note we are also having a game of wedding bingo after the speeches as it was one of OH mums favourite weekly activities... we are giving a bottle of whiskey as top prize- her nightly tipple!!

We are giving Help for Heroes pin badges as one of our favours because OH's best friend at work suddenly died of a heart attack taking part in a charity bike ride for HfH. He was only 41 so it was a massive shock and frightened my OH so much it made him propose to me days later. He was ex army and raised quite a bit for this charity so it feels right.

We took inspiration from one of our ushers who gave away cancer research pins at his wedding because he lost his Mum to cancer and we thought it was a great idea.

I'm not keen on favours in general so would prefer to make a donation to a charity instead. I would probably put a little note on the tables explaining that a donation had been made with a small bowl of pins, so people could take one if they wanted to but weren't obliged to.

I think they may not do them any more, as they disappeared off the website not long after I ordered them. You could always try contacting them and asking if they still have the pins though, they were nice!
