Chip shop vocab help please

KJB, 19 of January of 2009 at 10:59 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 33

What is the name for all the little crisp chippy bits left at the bottom of the fryer when all the large fat chips have been served? I believe you can actually request these, although I prefer the fat ones personally.

It's a silly name, but I can't remember for the life of me what it is.

Thanks

KJB

Is that the stuff they have in a pile where they keep the fish, sausage etc? In Dudley they call it scraps.

We call them toenails and I'm not far from you KJB. However, I think if you went into a chippy and asked for toenails they might look at you a bit funny!

It looks like there are lots of variations. I think scraps covers it best but I think scribblings is the one I had heard before, that I was trying to remember.

My family are Northern but I've lived down south all my life, and my husband is a Southerner. I took him to a chippy in Manchester when we were up visiting my Grandad, and they shouted "Barm?" at you when you ordered you food. Poor thing looked totally bewildered as she shouted it at him again when he looked confused ?

My OH is only from Darlington but he's totally baffled by chippy-speak since we moved back to Yorkshire. When I asked for twice with scraps and a breadcake he looked at me like I was speaking French to the chippy woman ?

I'm so happy to be back up north and to be able to get scraps again.

    Batter and its variants

The covering of the fish may also vary with bread-crumbs available alongside the traditional flour-based batter. In the United Kingdom batter comes as the standard coating, with breadcrumb-coated fish unavailable in many outlets.

Fish-and-chip suppliers in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland often include scraps of batter that fall into the fat and get fried (also known as batter, scratchins, scrumps, scraps, scrobblings, gribblings, bits, fishbits, crimps, fishcrimps, crispy bits, or batters) free on request. In theUnited States of America, some fish-and-chips aficionados refer to these as "cracklin's" (distinct from fried pork-rind cracklins).

Hmm, that means the north east actually use the correct term, and the rest of the UK are wrong. (wheres the smug icon gone?)

Having lived his entire life in Birmingham, H was stared at like he was a lunatic when he asked a Reading chippy lady for a scallop. ?

You don't get them down here - for southerners like me who didn't know what they were, it's battered mashed potato.

Waah, I had completely forgotten about scallops ? I lived near Brum until I was 20. Up here (in Hull) they're called patties.

Breadcakes is just silly, Kieren. It's either bread, or a cake. Bread, or a cake. Simple, yes?

    Clearly, it's bap ?

Yeah I'm still living in Sunderland. I live on the edge of Sunderland, pretty close to Newbottle actually. In fact I often visit the Sun Inn in the village.
