Christening gifts

Holey, 25 June, 2013 at 11:34 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

Sorry another 'help me' thread today, our nephew is being christened in a few weeks and we are totally stuck for what to buy as a gift. He will be two by the time the christening comes round. What can we buy? They aren't really trinkety people

I'm not keen on giving money as he hasn't got a bank account and I doubt it would be spent on him. (I realise you shouldn't give money with conditions attached but I can't help it!)

Willing to spend upto 50 quid if thats not too stingy

Am I missing an obvious christening gift that people normally give?

I did wonder about a canvas or picture for his room but I'm not convinced it would get used

see if you can get any ideas from my site. there are lots of items not yet on so if you see something elsewhere I can always check if I can get it cheaper for you. Also ignore the out of stock thing....having a few problems at the mo, it is all available

I don't attend many christenings so not sure if there are standard gifts or whatnot. My guide-daughter's naming ceremony was on her first birthday, so I just bought her loads of birthday crap. For her first Christmas, I bought her a silver money box, a cute pig from Mamas and Papas into which I chucked a wedge of notes. However, I had no qualms that the money would be saved for her. If you think you might want to save money for him in the next 15 years or so, could you open a Post Office account in his name and make a payment into that? You could then add to it in the future.

What about a set of books - Roald Dahl etc? TK Maxx do these cheaply.

The beatrix potter box set was only £30 on amazon when i bought it, I've seen this given as a christening gift in the past.

Buy something lovely which, even if it gets stuck in a box for 20 years, will be considered special when it is unpacked at that point.

Avoid things which are sold as christening presents particularly; including but not limited to money boxes (my eldest Stepdaughter got 14 money boxes for her christening - kind of the non-wedding toaster equivalent) unless like Footlong you are planning on stuffing it with cash. Silver photo frames, silver plate first tooth pots, cut crystal dummies (why?) etc. I thought that the beatrix poetter collection in the box was a great gift but both y girls received one and they haven't been used much.

My eldest (13) recently pulled down her present box and although she found the bunnikins 'sweet' really loves the antique jewellery, the leather prayer book (even though we aren't catholic) and some silver ponies from Mexico. Not much help for a nephew but i think that classic and not too fashionable may be the answer.

Good to know I'm not alone on the Mr Men AC!

MOMB when you say buy something special but not christening gifts what does that leave me?! I also suspect that these items won't be kept in a box for the future they'll be car booted!

I hate buying trinkets (aka "dust collectors") as Christening presents as well - I'd much rather give something that would be useful. I bought a child-sized stainless steel cutlery set for the last Christening that we went to and had it engraved with the child's initials. Books are also a great idea IMO!

H got a bottle of something-or-other (can't remember) and it was drunk around the time of our wedding ?

Books are a great present for a baby, we have a whole shelf full and I'm already bored of them and looking to expand!
