Church wedding- Catholic and c of e

Bethany, 25 March, 2025 at 23:37 Posted on Planning 0 49
Someone please help me!! I’m so confused. We are getting married in August at a Church of England church that is not local to us. The vicar mentioned a while back about getting our banns read at our loc parish as these will be the ones providing our certificate. My parish is catholic and this where the problems have begun! The priest at my local parish now wants us to attended a marriage course to ensure our marriage is valid in a Catholic Church. He has also said we need to contact the registry office. The registry office have said as we are getting married in a Church of England church they are not required. Do I need my marriage to valid in a Catholic Church as it is my Parish in order to actually get married at the Church of England church? Although I would consider myself a Catholic, I’m not keen on attending the courses and unless necessary not fussed about whether the Catholic Church sees our marriage as valid. I’m just completely baffled on what I need to do and if we do need anything from the register office?

I hope you have got this issue resolved by now - I only saw your post because the spam post above moved it into the 'recent comments' section!

    But if not:

You mention that your parish is Catholic, but that's not strictly accurate - both the Catholic and Anglican churches divide the country up into parishes, so your home will be in an Anglican parish as well as a Catholic one - you've just contacted your local Catholic church instead of the Anglican one! If you're not fussed about your wedding being a 'proper' Catholic one, then you can just go straight to the Anglican church to discuss having your banns read. (I wouldn't automatically reject any offers of marriage courses though -some of them can be really helpful. It depends on what they cover. We did one that went through various areas that were likely to cause conflict and discussed how to navigate things like finances, differing family expectations, how to disagree well etc - all useful stuff!)

So basically, an Anglican wedding is legally valid - you only need to speak to the local Catholic priest if you want to make sure that it's acceptable from a Catholic viewpoint, and it sounds as if you're not bothered about that.

You do NOT need to go to the registry office, unless:

    • You or your partner is not a British/Irish slope national or lacks settled status.

    • The Church of England vicar has told you banns are not possible and that you need a civil license instead (rare in your case).

I remember when my sister was figuring out how to handle conflicting family expectations with her own wedding. It was a messy situation, especially with everyone butting in about the Slope Game details. I would suggest focusing on what the Church of England requires and go from there. Don't get bogged down in unnecessary red tape!

That explanation about Catholic and Anglican parishes is really helpful, I did not know both systems overlapped like that. I am curious geometry dash spam , did you personally go through a marriage course before your wedding and if so what part of it did you find most helpful in preparing for married life?

Planning a wedding, especially across different denominations, can be really confusing! It sounds like you’re navigating both Church of England and Catholic requirements, and clarifying the paperwork early is key. Many couples find that contacting both parishes and explaining your situation helps avoid surprises. Also, discussing with someone who has recently done a mixed-denomination wedding can be invaluable.

When you need a mental break from all this planning stress, I’ve found playing a quick online game like Football Bros really helps me unwind while keeping my focus sharp — teamwork and strategy in the game can be surprisingly soothing after handling real-world coordination!

It can definitely feel overwhelming when dealing with differing church requirements for marriage. Generally, the Church of England parish where you marry will handle the banns and the certificate, so the registry office may not be required. If you don’t need Catholic validation, attending courses may be optional, but confirming with your local priest is wise. Patience and clear communication are key.

If you need a little fun break while planning, Wordle Helper is perfect. It keeps your brain engaged without taking too much time, making it a nice distraction from all the logistics and forms.
