Future Mrs Chuckles, 21 May, 2012 at 12:20 Posted on Planning 0 21

Hi all,

With almost a month to go, we are yet to decide our hymns for our Church ceremony. REALLY struggling to find ones we really like and want.

Would appreciate some ideas!

Thank you Smiley smile

Your choice could be guided by your guests. Are many of them church folk? If so, they may well know most hymns so you can choose some of the less school-like ones. If not, you may need to go with what many people will know from assemblies etc (if you want singing!).

The last hymn I remember singing at a wedding was the one that goes "Sing hosanna, sing hosanna, sing hosanna to the king of kings", where you can go really loud on the "king of kings" bit (which we did). No idea what it's called though. If you're catering to people like me (not churchy), that's the level you need!

Having a total mental block on mines except one - One More Step Along the World I Go - that's our last one, very wedding appropriate I think! x

    We are having

Praise my soul the King of Heaven

    Lord of All Hopefulness

    and

    Love Divine All Love Excelling

Not sure if you have been to your church preparation class yet but when we went they gave us a list of the most popular hymns for weddings that really helped us.

We are having Love Divine (a hymn that has been sung at almost every wedding on my Mum's side of the family and was a favourite of my Nan who sadly passed away recently) and Jerusalem (my other half is a rugby boy!!!). Jerusalem is a good one as loads of people will know it even if they are not church-goers, but it does mention "dark satanic mills" which some people think is a bit weird at a wedding but we don't mind!!

There is a CofE website which has a list of the top ten hymns for weddings, so that might be helpful for you if you are really struggling!

We have gone for quite popular ones in case anyone is shy of singing or doesn't go to church much! Give me joy; lord of the dance and the organist will play 'I watch the sunrise' while we sign the register - I love this one and it always makes me cry which is why we're not actually singing it!

That is "Give me oil in my lamp/joy in my heart." Tis a good one.

I agree that if you don't have a big churchgoing contingent in your congregation (or even if you do, but they go to different sorts of churches) you need to pick well-known ones. We had two fairly standard ones (Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer and Make Me a Channel Of Your Peace) and one quirkier one from when we were both at school (You Shall Go Out With Joy) - fewer people knew this but it's relatively simple so they got the hang of it.

I was a choirgirl for 7 years, so I know most of the usual CofE repertoire, but at more modern churches I'm totally stuck - went to a friend's wedding at a Baptist church and I'd never heard all but one of the hymns, plus they don't follow "standard" musical patterns with the melodies etc, so I struggled a bit. Other people less used to singing found it even harder, but fortunately they had enough people from that church, plus a singer with a microphone next to the band, so they kind of kept us going in the right direction!

We're having Dear Lord and Father of Mankind, Make me a channel of your piece and Lord of all Hopefulness. Also considered Be thou my vision but it has the same turn as Lord of all Hopefulness. We had these hymns for our confirmation earlier this year so it'll bring back nice memories.

We're having Jerusalem because of an in joke between myself and D, and our second hymn is One More Step, because the words are lovely.

At the moment, OH and I are thinking Jerusalem for our first song. We both love this, but I am a little worried it might be a little flat if people don't sing! We have 105 guests inthe church, so I am hoping it will sound ok!

Our second hymn is Lord of all Hopefulness, and we are stuck on a third. All the ones we know/like sound to schooly and make us think of primary school!

We are having Morning has Broken, Make me a Channel of your Peace and Sing Hosanna.

There weren't my first choice but after discussing with the vicar we thought that these were most appropriate/familiar for our guests the majority of which are non church goers. I've told people that if I see them not singing then the don't get any dinner?!

Thank you so much for all your help ladies - I really appreciate it!!

I had listened to all the hymns on Your Church Wedding, but found it difficult to envision them due to some LOUD ASS singing going on from one woman, lol.

I will keep looking Smiley smile

Ours was a catholic mass. We had Mike Andersons Gloria!(the clapping one) Morning has broken, Colours of day and Be still for the presence of the lord. We also had 2 non church songs, All you need is love, the Beatles and Eva Cassidy, Songbird. These are not neccesarilly wedding hymns but happy and joyful I feel and Be still is just beautiful, we had this for the offertory of communion gifts.

We are having Lord of all hopefulness, then We pledge to one another, and lastly give me joy in my heart. I did want As the deer pants for the water (perfect for a wedding in my opinion) but don't think most of our family would know it Smiley sad
