Civil ceremonies - what readings are you having?

30 March, 2011 at 08:04 Posted on Planning 0 16

I'm sure this has come up loads before, just wondering. Been looking through websites and found some quite odd suggestions - like a verse from Hamlet. It's very nice and all ("Doubt thou the stars...") but it's from Hamlet to Ophelia. Hardly ideal for a wedding.

I wanted I Carry Your Heart by ee cummings as it's been one of my favourite poems for years but am in two minds as everyone seems to have it. One of my friends had her mum read Dance Me To The End Of Love by Leonard Cohen which was brilliant. Trying to think of more interesting stuff, lyrics, etc but am a bit lost.

We are using a slightly modified version of "I will be here" by Stephen Curtis Chapman as our additional vows, which we will read between us.

Not confirmed for the second but that'll be read by a guest for us.

I want someone to read "A Lovely Love Story" by Edward Monkton, but am struggling to find someone to do it! I had asked my mum but she's said she'd rather not because she can't get past the first line without crying!

We're thinking about having 'Union' by Robert Fulghum and 'On Your Wedding Day' - it's an anon one but starts 'Today is a day you'll always remember ...'

I'm sure we'll change our minds as we get a bit nearer though!

SIL(2B as she was then lol) read Union by Robert Fulghum first as it ends:

Now you shall say a few words that take you across a threshold of life, and things will never quite be the same between you. For after these vows, you shall say to the world, this is my husband, this is my wife.

My best friend/bridesmaid read A Lovely Love Story by Edward Monkton from the actual book and lastly we had my FIL read Chapter One of One Thousand by O J Preston which rounds up the day nicely:

For two people this dawn brought on a magical day
Now husband and wife they head on their way
As a boat setting sail may their journey begin
With calmest of waters, most helpful of wind
And if they should stumble upon turbulent sea
May it pass them unharming – leave them be

For here are two people whom love has well bitten
Here opens their book which has yet to be written
As the first page unfolds and their life inks its path
May it write a true story where forever love lasts
Let their journey be happy till death do they part
Of one thousand chapters may this be the start

Naboo where are you having yours positioned during the service? I called the registrars up the other day and she said I can have them where I want I just need to indicate on the form where I want them.

I was thinking reading 1 after the welcome but before the presentation of the bride

Reading 2 after if anyone has a reason why they can't be married and before our legal bits (not sure of this has to flow through though)

and reading 3 before exchange of rings......they'd all be pretty close together though so may be a bit interupted!!

Ours is a humanist ceremony so is a little bit different

we are having a welcome (after I have arrived) and a bit about humanism

    then the first reading

then a bit for the celebrant about love

    then the second reading

then all the rest of the ceremony incl vows and register and the Dr Seuss one as a close to the ceremony read by the celebrant (if you read it you will see why)

Dr Seuss is a great reading!! love it!

This is our last reading....Ideally i think it needs to come after we've been pronunced husband and wife.......maybe we could do that before signing the registrar?

Thats a lovely reading too, kind of like ours need to come towards the end of the ceremony, ask for your registrars ceremony guideline and then you can see where it can be slotted in, i think it would be nice before you sign the register, or just before you exit

We had our registry office pack come this week and it has a load of suggested readings with it. One of them was 'the owl & the pussycat'...I read it out to H2B and we were in stitches. Anyone else think this is a bit......rude?!!!

The Owl and the ***-cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped up in a five pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
    'O lovely ***! O *** my love,
What a beautiful *** you are,
    You are,
    You are!
What a beautiful *** you are!'
