Does any one know how long it takes to send an engagement ring off to get cleaned?

I use my local independant jewellers for things like that. I put it in for resizing and rhodium plating last weds and it was ready by Monday for £40.

The shop my ring came from (Swag) cleans it free of charge whenever I want. It takes about 5 minutes and comes out looking brand new again.

If it's literally just being cleaned then they should do it whilst you wait.

I popped in to a jewellers on Saturday to enquire about bands and she offered to clean my engagement ring. Did it there and then, took less than 5 mins.

Someone mentioned Rhodium coating...how long did you have to wait before it needed doing? Ive had my white gold ring for 13 months and its still as sparkly as the day I got it.

My Platinum engagement ring is from Argos and I saw on H Samuels website they did cleaning. Went in and asked and they cleaned it there are then, took about half an hour. If it's like when I worked at Argos, it's literally just Sonic Jewellery cleaner in the Sonic Jewellery machine or similar. I've just bought some liquid gold cleaner from Argos for £3.99 that you just submerge it in, rinse and wipe down. It brings it up lovely.

If you just want to get the sparkle back a bit, I make a slushy mix of bicarbonate of soda and water for my white gold diamond ring. Paste it all over and leave it for as long as you can and it'll come out sparkling!

My white gold engagement ring is now just over two years old and I noticed when trying on wedding bands last week that it is starting to show signs of needing re-coated. It's done better than I imagined it would considering the abuse it takes on a daily basis. H Samuel quoted approx £30 and said around a week. I'm going to hold off and have it done just before the wedding. I do clean it regularly in a bowl of fairy liquid with a toothbrush and the diamond comes up lovely.

I use washing up liquid in warm water and a baby toothbrush for my platinum engagement ring. Works a treat.

My jewellers does it for free while I wait but I'm never organised enough to take it.

My jeweller does it for free too. I just drop it off at the start of my lunch hour then pick it up at the end.

Someone once told me that soaking it in a beaker of gin will clean it but that's a terrible waste!

    1. Surely you'd only need a tiny amount though, not a beaker?
    2. I'd still drink it......

Apparently Elizabeth Taylor used to clean her gems in vodka... Doubt she cleaned them herself at all - but that's the story!

Similar to Harvo, I soak mine in warm water and washing up liquid over night, they come out lovely.

Am tempted to get a sonic cleaner too - F.Hinds do one for £19.99 (same as Argos).

All my hard stone rings (like diamond) I've cleaned in vodka - it brings the diamond up very very sparkly, then just run them under the cold tape and leave to dry and polish the metal with a gold cloth (I only have yellow gold - white gold doesn't suit me at all). For silver apparently, brown sauce will work.

Don't ever put pearls or opals in any form of liquid though - it can cause cracks as they are porous.. (fire opals - the hard stones are ok though, different type and the only opal that can be carved. I've got one in a ring, it looks like an orange smartie Smiley smile )

There is no way I would waste good gin on my ring. The gin is more valuable ?
