Clothes and jobs and stuff...

Storky, 13 of February of 2013 at 10:15 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 33

Ladies and the Funkstah, thank you very much for your vibes! You rock! Exciting new challenge secured for me, as of the beginning of March, but it does mean I need to do some serious shopping.

Where's good at the moment for nice tailored dresses, stylish work wear and nice jackets/cardies in jewel colours? What forms part of your staple wardrobe? A lot of my stuff is LK Bennett at the moment but as I need a fair bit of stuff I need to be shopping where I won't blow my entire budget on 4 dresses! So, good people of Hitched, help me spend some money!

I wear a lot of blues, black and grey for work. Needs to be suitably formal for meetings but also comfy for when I'm in the office. Am shortish, blondish and sz 8 (thanks, Hitched Fat Fighters!). Rarely wear trousers for work but don't want anything that's more than an inch above the knee!

What do you wear for work? *am nosy*

Are you going to tell us what it is then, Storks?!

I dress smrt/casual for work. No jeans but often short kilt/pleated/wool skirts and flat boots (with tights!).

I never wear shirts or jackets - always a jumper or a top and cardi.

Rarely wear heels - the car park is a 15 minute walk away.

    Today I am wearing:

    Flat suede knee high boots

A grey pleated skirt that finishes a couple of inches above my knee

    A black t shirt

    A black cardi

I am quite casual for work - always black trousers or skirt with tights, then lots and lots of vests, tees and jumpers layered on, and usually some form of ballet pump. Can't help with shops, my stuff is all from DP, Topshop or Tesco, though I do like some Zara and French Connection stuff. F.C. UK tend to be slightly larger and looser fitting and I find Zara comes up quite small.

    What's the job/opportunity?

    Huge congrats Storky!

I'm no good on the posh stuff, but I'd recommend Next for middle of the range work gear. I love their shift dresses, although my shape means I can't wear them. They do nice mix and match ranges too with trousers, skirts, dresses and jackets.

I tend to live in smart trousers and tops/jumpers during the winter, mostly Next trousers as I like the fit and they do long length, and summer dresses in summer. If I were doing the same job in a larger firm or in a city, I'd be expected to be in tailored suits etc all the time but I can be a lot more casual here.

Bonus points for pictures of your fave outfits!

Sorry to be so vague about it, I still have a few things to tie up here. Essentially I'll be joining a larger version of my company in order to create a new department specialising in my area of expertise. Hoping to be appointed to the board within 18 months which gives me a smaller slice of a much bigger pie, compared to where I am (big slice of a smaller pie). Clear as mud, eh?! ?

Thanks for the shop recommendations, Knees and PB. Next usually scares the bejesus out of me but I might have a wander in there. Thanks ladies x

Today I am wearing jeans from sainsburys and a t shirt and sweatshirt from the cancer research charity shop! Am guessing your job does not involve mud and so you need to be a bit smarter...

I often buy dresses etc from the LK Bennet outlet on ebay so maybe worth checking out the outlets of your fave shops?

    This is today's dress:

    http://www.dorothyperkins.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&langId=-1&storeId=12552&catalogId=33053&parent_categoryId=226988&categoryId=758125&productId=8747743

Pretty much all of my work wear comes from DP. I usually add a cardigan (or a blazer if I need to be more formal), black tights and 3 inch patent heels.

Yes kharv! My favourite work blazer (short sleeved so a bit more trendy) is from Warehouse.

Dorothy Perkins has good work wear depending where you go (or obviously look online). When I worked in London, the DPs round the corner from my office had lovely tailoring, but the one in my home town has nothing smart at all.

Those dresses Cinnamonfairy posted are lovely.

Would you rule out buying LK Bennett dresses from ebay? Especially if you know they suit you.

That's nice, WW! Where's that one from?

Completely happy to buy things from ebay, particularly where I know what size fits me in a particular brand, having a look on there now! Thanks, ladies, some ace ideas.

Anywhere tried and tested for cardies? I need them to wash well and be suitable to wear with a belt too.

I have lots of the same cardi from New Look in about 5 different colours but probably not smart enough for what you're looking for.

What about somewhere like M&S? They'd definitely wash well and last.

Pretty much all my work clothes are from Dotty P's. They're stuff is fabulous.

I'm casual today, my mood is pretty casual - and I have an ever so slight champagne headache so wasn't in the mood for being formal.

Anyway, my staples. Long sleeved tops. I have them in about 10 different colours. They're great. For under jumpers, with trousers, with skirts. They're fab. Mine were 2 for a tenner from Select, which is a cheapy shop. But you can get them anywhere really.

This is weird because I was going to ask something very similar as I am hopefully moving to a new job and think I need to smarten up. So will take all this on board. The only thing I would ask is that I pretty much always wear trousers as in my job I could be called out to building sites that day and a skirt is not appropriate (aside from looking like an idiot in a skirt and rigger boots). So where is good for trousers? I'm tall though with a 34inch inside leg. I always used to go to Next but the last couple of pairs I bought from there were awful

I really like Banana Republic for trousers, Holey. They've got 25% off today as well as cash back on Quidco, I think.

High awaited pencil skirts are plentiful in primark. I had to stop wearing them though as I look too pregnant.

Hm are ok for work stuff too. I tend to wear dresses and blazers/suit jackets, tweedy trousers, heeled loader type shoes and pearls was yesterday's interviewing outfit. Today is an admin day so am in jeans and a geek t shirt :p

Storky I think we are in similar lines of work. I mostly shop in Hobbs, Whistles, Jaegar, LK Bennett Karen Millen or Jigsaw.

    The new lines are lovely.

What's the sizing like in Jaeger and Jigsaw? I'm not sure I have anything from either of those.

I miss my office days Smiley sad I was a sucker for a high-waisted pencil skirt, heels and a nice shirt or jumper, maybe with a pretentious scarf.

now I live in leggings and snot covered jumpers.
