Cost of real flowers

AnnaMolly, 30 March, 2015 at 12:55 Posted on Planning 0 16

I know this is a bit difficult as everyone chooses different things but how much are you spending/how much do you think is reasonable for flowers?

I'm going to need a bouquet (smallish, hand tied, probably with roses), small bouquet for BM, 2 small flower crowns for flower girls, 6 button holes and two corsages for our mums.

I've seen things online that says I should expect to be paying £**** for a florist. Erm... REALLY??! Am I that naive about it?

I was also thinking about getting them to do flowers in jars for the tables (see flash) but if that's what I'm going to have to spend I'll think again!

    Woahhh!!! That's steep

i have my bouquet, 3 bridesmaids bouquets and 4 buttonholes all for the grand total of £153.00. Shop around at local florists just to get prices. I've used a small florists in the village near us. A lovely lady and great flowers and prices Other places wanted double that amount for the same thing.

Dont get disheartened, shop around in person and not just on internet

    good luck x

Sounds about right to me but i was extravagant.

i had all roses- nothing else, the week before valentines.

my bouquet, 3 maids, 2 mums lapels, buttons holes for groom, best man, best man, usher, usher, usherette, wrist, usherette hair, page boy, FOB, FOG, garland for top table, garland for barn beam, large rose heart for barn beam, 8 table centres, top table, cake flowers.

first quote was over well £2k but we talked them down and got it in at £1400-ish/just under.

We paid just under $1300AUD for:

    1 Bridal bouquet

    2 BM bouquet

    4 button holes

    4 corsages

    24 table bouquets

    flowers for the cake

    We budgeted $2k.

I agree that you should get a local quote. I found online calculators were wildly off the mark. Plus a florist can work within your budget and suggest alternatives.

    For under £400 we're having:

    bridal bouquet

    3 bridesmaid bouquets

    4 buttonholes

1 throwing bouquet (I want to keep mine!)

simple table centre arrangements that will go in our diy jars

    flowers for cake

The season of our wedding worked in our favour tbh as more things are readily available during the summer time. Maybe have a look at flowers that will be in season at the time of your wedding.

My flowers have cost just over £400. This includes my hand tied bouquet (rose, peony, gerbra) with diamante in the roses, ribbon hoops etc. 4 rose BM bouquets, a top table peice, 5 button holes and 2 corsages. This includes delivery. Best advice as just been said is shop around- the 'wedding florists' over charge

Our quotes were in that region and we had booked:

Large bridal bouquet with bark around stem

    1 grooms buttonhole

    Decoration of our naked cake

Heavy floral decoration of 10x 2m tables, including moss table runners for each

Floral crown was quoted at £95 and the same for 2 floral dog collars, but we didn't go for those.

No idea what flowers though, we told the florist what colours we didn't want or like and told her to use whatever she felt best.

Like most wedding services, prices will vary hugely. With floristy, we noticed that quotes varied a lot dependant on whether a) The florist has a shop or worked from home b) Whether they did any other floristry work, or whether they only did weddings. The ones that only did weddings tended to cost more because it's their only source of income. That said, for us, hands down we always preferred the work of those who specialised in weddings.

    Hey AnnaMolly,

I'm having artifical flowers are we are paying just over £500 for the following: (I was told artifical are slightly more expensive than real)

1 x 2ft Bridal teardrop bouquet (calla lilies, hydrangea, gyp, freesia & Fern)

2 x hand tied Bridesmade bouquet (hydrangea, gyp, freesia & Fern)

1 x grooms button hole (calla lily)

12 (yes 12) x male button holes (hyrdangea) dads, uncles, grandfathers

    2 x mums Corsages (fressia)

    2 x auntie corsages (fressia)

1 x 3ft wedding table display (calla lilies, hydrangea, gyp, freesia & Fern)

2 x poses (hydrangea, gyp, freesia & Fern)

Your quote to me seems a little high. Aer you looking to get them online or are you able to pop into florstis for quotes? If you can i always think it helps to have a couple of comparison quotes xx

Eek. I seriously had no idea people paid so much for flowers! Thought that was only Elton John Smiley winking

There are a couple of florists recommended by my venue which work from their own gardens in the same village and they honestly look stunning. They have both won wedding industry awards for their flowers so I'm guessing this might hike up the price a little.

I'm going to have to shop around I suppose. Anyone recommend a good florist in Surrey (probably the most expensive county in the country ?)?

I have budgeted £70 for my bouquet and OH's buttonhole and £200 for table decorations - but to be honest, while the bouquet and buttonhole are based on an estimate given by florist, the £200 are a wild guess. We only have one table to decorate though, so I reckon it should be ok. We have an appointment with a florist this Friday. It's hard getting estimates for table decorations as we don't really know what we want yet.

i'm on the surrey/hants/berks apex border so i got the best/worst of all three expensive counties! lol i'd reccommened my florist- the lavender hill company- but as i say my bill was steep.

for my parents party in farnham we're using taylor made flowers of frimely green, and she not only does amazing work, she has excellent pricing, but obviously it being a party we're ordering a lot less.....

Hi - I'm a retired florist so can give you a rough ball park figure. For a round, hand-tied posy for yourself in normal bridal size you would be looking at between £70 - £100. I've allowed extra for the fact that you live in the south of the country where prices are much higher than in the north where I am. This is nothing to do with the actual florist as such but the wide difference in the overheads such as rent and rates etc. You can keep prices down by choosing flowers which are in season and by not going for 'luxury' blooms such as orchids, peonies, lily of the valley. You can also keep your costs down considerably by giving your florist a free reign on the choice of the flowers if you're not overly fussed about variety. This means he/she can create the bouquet you want well within your budget as there may be flowers you haven't seen before that they could use very reasonably.

For bridesmaids, I have always said on here many times over the years, spend as little as possible on them! Spend the bulk of your budget on your bouquet and the Groom's buttonhole as you will be the focus of everyone's attention on the day. Yes, the guests will see the maids but ask them at the end of the day what they were carrying and I doubt they could tell you. Most of your photographs at home after your wedding will be of you as a couple and not photos of the bridesmaids so it's just not worth spending excessively on them. A single rose or a single lily is very popular and costs around £10 mark.

For the little ones, you have picked a fairly expensive item with the floral circlets. These are all individually wired and take a long time to do. As with all floristry items, skill and time costs money. You will be able to buy ready made headbands on the net for much cheaper or from a jeweller who specialises in this type of item.

Buttonholes for the Groom vary from £3 - £10 again depending on what flower you have. The Groom normally has a buttonhole more elaborate than the rest of the guys so he stands out on the photos as being the Groom. If budget is tight, then by all means you can have them all the same.

Corsages for lady guests vary from £12-£25 depending again on flowers. Please bear in mind that corsages are not just a 'fancy' buttonhole. They are made entirely different to buttonholes and take much more skill and time to do - hence the higher charge. Corsages are made from lots of tiny little flowers which are all individually wired and then constructed together to form a miniature bouquet that Mums can wear on their outfit. If you prefer wrist corsages, these are more expensive than lapel corsages because you have the added cost of the bracelet.

You will generally find that out of town florists are less expensive than high street florists shops as the rent/rates etc are less out of town. Hope that helps.

Over the Rainbow, thank you so much! That is very helpful. I never knew circlets were so expensive but actually I suppose it does make sense. They will look gorgeous though, so I'm not ready to give them up.

Thanks miss winter - I used to live in the same area, I just took comfort in that at least it wasn't London prices Smiley winking

They are gorgeous and can be either slimline or chunky. I guess you would be looking somewhere in the region of £25-£30 each for slimline ones and approaching the £50 mark each for chunky ones.

Wow that's a lot! In Somerset, I paid around £450 for handtied bride's bouquet with roses and three smaller bridesmaid bouquets. Then four male rose buttonholes and three ladies' corsages. One table garland and adding additional long stemed roses into existing table vases. I didn't think that was bad. It pays to shop around.

I'm waiting on my formal estimate from my first meeting with a florist, I have a few booked in yet! But I was quoted £2500 by a local florist to my wedding venue! OH nearly died!

    Ive roughly estimated that my flowers will be about £**** and will include;

    1 x bridal bouquet

    5 x bridesmaids bouquets

    5 x button holes

    2 x 'mothers' corsages

    1 x best woman corsages

10 x table centre pieces which are £50 each and will be a circle of flowers that the candelabras are placed into, flowers will be of different heights etc

1 x top table decorations (full length of top table)

1 x large vase of flowers for the entrance hall

1 x flower archway for the ceremony

and possibly 8-10 small posts to line the aisle!

Im having lots of typical garden/cottage types flowers in corals, peaches, apricots, creams, mint greens and lots of dark green foliage with some moss on the centre tables!

No no restrictions on flower types just no lillies or carnations! I am having roses and sweet peas for definite though!

I'd say your quote at 12-1500 is bordering on extortion!

I paid 580 last August for 1x hand tied Bridal bouquet

    1x BM Bouquet

    1x Flower girl posy

    2x ladies coursages

    5x mens button holes

20x hand tied pew end arrangements (which we then repurposed into jugs for the table centrepieces)

    3x top table floral arrangements

    1x cake table floral arrangement

20x hand decorated jars used as candle holders

Plus the florist delivered flowers to 4 locations on the day and installed all the Church decorations incl placing and lighting over 80 candles which we hadn't requested, but which suited our style and church beautifully and looked stunning.

Sounds like we bagged a bargain in comparison.
