Costs for guests

Jordan, 8 April, 2025 at 07:51 Posted on Etiquette and Advice 0 3
Hi all,
Looking at getting married at a venue where we get 20 rooms as part of the hire. We would ideally charge guests around £150 to stay here for the night but not sure if this is too expensive?
Also the drinks are around £7 for a glass of wine and £12 for a cocktail - does this feel too high? Conscious of how much we are asking guests to pay so just looking to see if people think this is reasonable or not.

It's always a tricky one when rooms come as part of the overall hire charge. I'd suggest considering a couple of things:

    1) You need to be careful that your guests don't feel like they are being asked to subsidise your wedding venue costs - so make sure that the amount you charge for rooms doesn't end up being a large part of the overall budget! If the venue hires out rooms normally, it might be worth finding out what their standard charge is, and then fixing the cost for your guests at a little under that - that way, they are getting a 'discount' on the room cost, and it won't feel like they are being expected to fund your wedding!

    2) Think about your guest list and how many are likely to take advantage of the rooms. If you have a very large guest list and/or your guests are well off, you probably won't find it hard to get the rooms booked up. But if you have a smaller guest list or most of your guests are on tight budgets, you may find that they prefer to travel home or find cheaper accommodation nearby. So you may be better off charging a lower cost to fill all the rooms rather than a higher cost to fill just some.

I'd also suggest not booking the venue unless you can afford the cost even if none of the rooms get booked by your guests - nothing worse than hoping to recoup some of the costs by reselling rooms only to find that no one wants them. You really don't need that kind of stress, so make sure you can afford the venue cost outright, and then any rooms you manage to book will be a pleasant bonus for you.

As far as costs go, the drinks sound eye-wateringly expensive to me, but I'm based in Wales, not Kent! Probably best to ask some locals what they think, as prices vary across the country.

Thanks so much for this. I think you’re right, if we can’t afford to pay for all the rooms ourselves we probably shouldn’t go with that venue!!
I just think we are asking too much from guests

£150 for a night doesn’t sound too bad if the venue is really nice, especially if it includes breakfast or any extras. The drinks are a bit on the pricey side, but not unusual for a wedding venue.
