laurenbird, 20 May, 2008 at 14:59 Posted on Planning 0 11

Im just dipping my toe into all this atm, but was wondering how much a civil ceremony would cost in a registry office? i would like it to be performed in a venue i have fallen for but its so expensive. is it massively less to be married in a registry office?

thanks, L xx

I think it is a lot less expensive to do it in a registry office, as if you have the ceremony in the same venue that you'll have your reception you'll be paying for the whole wedding 'package' if you see what I mean (that's what it's like for our venue anyway - it may vary from venue to venue). I'd look into the difference if I were you, but that would be my guess.

Yes, its only around £45 to marry in a registry office, we decided to go the registry office route to have more money to spend on the reception. I think is varies from office to office and it also depends on what day you want to mary too. Its much cheaper to marry on a week day. Also if you marry in a civil venue you have to pay the registrar to come to your venue which again varies on the office and the day

You have to pay to give notice too, regardless of wether you marry in a registry office or a civil venue which is around £60 per person too. so all in all we have spent £165 for the whole wedding which gave us loads of extra for the other stuff

It varies - obviously you have to see what the venue cost is on top of the registar fees but it can be £300-400 for a venue and about £100 for a registry office.

For us the actual registrar fees are £197 at the venue or somewhere round £150ish at the registry office. We obviously have to pay to hire the venue for the ceremony too but we're in the middle of no-where and its so much easier to have everything in the same place...

Our venue is charging us £325 pounds to use the venue for the ceremony and the regstrar charges £273.50 for coming to venue and performing the ceremony. Everywhere is different and I would say that the registry office id definately cheaper but you need to balance that with what you actually want. For me our venue is so much nicer than the registry office, plus we dont need cars so we saved money there.

Our venue charges £600 to have the civil ceremony there plus it's £385 that we pay the registrar for the service.

MUCH cheaper to do it in a registry office but it wasn't the sort of wedding we wanted.

Our venue charges £300 to have the civil ceremony there (obviously on top of their hire fees for reception) and the registrar is costing £250, plus £60 to give notice. It's definitely cheaper to get married in the registry office but for us there were space issues as we have a lot of guests and also I like that we don't have to travel

The cost of a statutory ceremony in a 'register office' in England/Wales is £40. However many former register offices are now 'decommissioned' which means they can set their own fees agreed by the local county/borough/city council. The decommissioned office fees are generally still much cheaper than approved venues and can be around £80 to £160 depending on the day. Approved venue charges can vary from £250 up to £500 and again fees are set locally in each registration service.

In a register/decommissioned office there is the chance that ceremonies would be every half hour whereas in the approved venues there is often just the one wedding.

    Hello All

Mine is different, its cheaper for us to get married at our venue rather than the registry office. Our Venue aren't charging us any extra to have our ceremony there and it's costing £303 for the registrar to come out to us.

The regsitry would have cost us £350 plus the hire of the bus to get everyone back to the reception so we've saved nearly £700 by having it all in the one place.
