Credit card fraud

Hoobygroovy, 9 October, 2008 at 05:06 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

Well it's finally my turn to have my card cloned, it would seem. I awoke early and couldn't get back to sleep so thought I'd check my bank balance online, expecting my credit card balance to be either empty or a matter of a few pounds as I paid it off last week. My surprise at seeing a Bus Eireann payment for internet access from a couple of days ago was as nothing compared to the shock of yesterday's £2061.92 payment to Pixmania. Wonder what bastard is awaiting delivery of a plasma telly or other luxury electrical item that I can't afford to buy myself.

The card has been cancelled and I now have to wait for the Fraud Dept of my bank to get back to me during office hours. There's another outstanding payment for £2600 waiting to go through too, although the bank couldn't see what it was for yet. Some fecker is having a lot of fun at my expense.

Somehow I don't think I'll be getting back to sleep now. My heart started thumping when I first spotted the credit card balance and it hasn't slowed down completely yet. Cuppa, anyone...? ?

    Blimey ?!

At least you caught it after just a couple of days. The ccredit card co can still reverse the payment so it should be tied up fairly quickly at your end. Pretty scary though. Grab a cuppa and a biscuit and try to get some sleep if you can.

Thanks. I overspent a bit last month so I've been keeping close tabs on my spending this month and checking every few days. I thought I was looking at my available funds at first. I felt a bit sick when I realised it was the card balance.

That's me up for the day now, I think. I noticed it at half three and I've been wide awake since then. Might as well do the ironing now and wait for the bank to call back. Ho hum. All part of life's rich tapestry, I suppose...

How horrible, I hope that they sort it out quickly for you.

Mr M's bank called last night to ask if he had used his credit card for a couple of transactions yesterday, quite large amounts. He had luckily but it's quite reassuring that they are so on the ball. They wanted to check as it was unusual spending for him - probably because I had his credit card ?

My Halifax card was used fraudulently, but the Halifax spotted it before I did, phoned me and immediately refunded the money. It was for something from Argos and a train ticket. Argos sent me a £10 voucher for spending over £100 with them!

Tesco phoned me recently as they saw some unusual activity on my card, but it was just me booking our holiday. They were very quick to check, though, within a few minutes of me booking the flights and hotel, which I thought was excellent

    Hope you get it sorted

Have you ever done transactions of this amount before?

Reason I ask - there are markers of how a card is used by the card holder , as most spending habits are the same throughout a cards life.

There is also a marker for those who have just recently cleared a card & have a large transaction go through ( what are the chances of a card being used by a fraudster, a few days after a balance is cleared down)

Hope you get it sorted out.

FD have phoned me in the past to check unusually large transactions. I'm a bit surprised they didn't question a couple of transactions totalling nearly 5 grand.

I just wish they'd phone me back so I could get to the bottom of it. The credit card account has now been removed from my online banking so I can't see if there have been any other transactions since. [drums fingers and stares at phone impatiently]

It's a real pain when your card gets cloned, I think I've had mine done about 4 times now! The last time was a few months ago when I noticed a transaction of £1000 to a hairdressing supply shop. I managed to get hold of their number from google, called them up and queried it. Apparently someone had all my card details as well as my home address and telephone number and had used my info to order two salon chairs. Luckily the goods hadn't been dispatched so the order was cancelled and I got my money back within two days. Much quicker than leaving the bank to deal with it.

I've been very impressed by Barclays - I got some money out of a cashpoint in Budapest, and when I saw that the denominations were huge I tried to make a second withdrawal of a smaller amount. To my surprise, it didn't go through, but I just thought that something had gone wrong with the machine and thought nothing of it (I certainly wasn't going to stick my card back in to try again!) - but within minutes someone had rung me up on my mobile asking whether I was actually in Budapest.

That's the second time they've enquired about "suspicious" transactions - the first was when I ordered DVDs from the Czech Republic and Hong Kong on consecutive days.

Oh how annoying for you, but good that you spotted it so soon.

Touch wood, I've never been cloned but I check my balance online quite a lot so hoping if I ever did that I'd spot it if the bank didn't.

My husband had his debit card done a few years ago, asked him if he had some tesco shopping delivered to an address in London (he lived in Wigan and had never even been to London at that time!)
