Creme de la mer - is it worth it?

Starlet, 8 January, 2009 at 15:15 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 28

I'm thinking of getting some of this for my birthday this month and was wondering if its worth the price tag? I'll be 33 so have a few lines appearing (sadly), my skins prone to a little bit of dryness and also a few spots and spot scars. Anyone used it that would like to share their thoughts on it?

I use it. It's fabulous and a real treat for my skin. Unfortunately the price tag means that it stays as a treat ?. But I highly recommend Soap & Glory Fill Monty as a high street option. It's nowhere the same price (under a tenner) and I'd say it's comes a very close second.

But... CDLM is def worth it if money is no object.

Thanks for your replies. I probably can't justify buying it on a regular basis at £90 for 30ml but I can't think of anything else thats a bit special for my birthday present so I think I'll get it ?

I go through phases of using it, but when I run out I don;t run to buy more. I tend to be passing the stand in duty free or house of fraser and think 'ooooh, i've not had any of that yummy cream in a while'. To be honest, it will not change your life. Interestingly, I started using it when I gave up smoking about 5 years ago. As a treat, to reward myself for giving up, I decided to spend the cash I'd saved on beauty treats, and so started using cdlm. The change in my skin was UNFUCKINGBELIEVEABLE. It was as if I was a freshfaced teenager again. Sadly, last year I started smoking again, and when passing through the terminal 5 last Juyly I grabbed some cdlm because I hadn't had it for a year or two. This time, no such miraculous change. A bit better than my usual stuff, but not like before where people would actually notice and comment. This leads me to believe that it was smoking cessation which helped my skin, and not just the product. Having said all that, my skin does look much better when I use it and it's the only think I've found so far which nourishes and drenches my flaky dry bits without giving me spots. If you honestly have £200 to psend on a treat, I'd get a short course of micordermabrasion and the doctor sebagh starter kit (I can find you a link to this- fabulous fabulous products).

Minx, I will investigate that soap and glory one straight away! ?

Fill Monty (for me) does a very good job.

It's £9.99 for a [very!] small tub of cream but it's so thick that you really only use a little each day anyway. And Boots usually have that range on 3 for 2 offers quite regularly so I always try and stock up when they do ?.

I can also recommend the eye gel from the same range... can't remember what it's called though? Stings like a *** just after putting it on though ?.

As does the lip plumper. Although I've not noticed myself with stunning Angelina Jolie lips yet... ?

I used this for a while and my skin hated it. I came out in horrible spots. I went to see them after about 6 weeks of using it and the girl on the counter had the exact same spots as me. She was new and had been using it for a few weeks. I think it was just far too rich for my skin. My friend works Bobbie Brown who are owned by the same parent company so she got it for me 70% off so I wasn't overly gutted to have wasted the money. I would have cried if I'd paid full price though.

Your roc thingy will be great for inbetween treatments and keeping it up, but you'll be amazed at how fantabulous an actual proper md treatment is, with it's wonderful sucky upper thing and fascinating miraculousness.

Pooch, it comes in a lighter lotion form for people whose skin can't handle the cream version, which I'm sure would help with the spots. I personally love it, I haven't bought any for ages (like Lou I tend to either get it from Duty Free or House of Fraser when they're having a points/discount day), but I think I might splash out again - I probably buy it once a year. I'd say the 30ml pot if you use it sparingly (and you don't need to dollop it on anyway, you warm it up with your palms to help it go on better), would last you about 3-4 months.

It's sooooooooooo fabby - I wouldn't say it's "worth" the amount it costs, but it is excellent if you can afford it. As an alternative (and I'm going to check out the Soap & Glory stuff asap!) Lush's Skin's Shangri-La is also excellent, and about £25.

PMSL at the quotes on this. Splitting water?! Holy crap - that's not necessarily a good thing ?

However, as the marketing stuff was certainly complete bollocks I guess it's not a problem to put it on your skin. I'm not sure how much better it can be than any other moisturiser - there's actually a limit as to what you can do with skin.

Thanks everyone, the 30ml isn't too expensive at less than £90 although its more than I'd normally spend but its my birthday so I am absolved from guilt!

    cheers for the link LouM

It's a lot of money to spend on moisturiser but when I think of what I can spend/waste on things like coffees in town on a Saturday, lunches at work when I could bring stuff in from home... I find myself justifying it ?. Plus it does last a long time. And as you say, it's a birthday treat so you don't have to justify it at all actually ?.

Let us know how you get on. When's your birthday?

There is no need to spend a lot of money on skincare. Boots Botanics (or something similar) are all you need. You could get a face mask, scrub and moisturiser for less than 30 quid and that would be sufficient.

I use the face mask once a week, the scrub twice a week and the moisturiser twice a day (I also drink plenty of water) and people are always complementing me on my skin.

I am a new convert to Soap and Glory and their products are fab and don't break the bank. I wish I would afford things like that but my skin is so prone to breakouts - its very, very oily - it wouldn't be worth the money.

I've used the Boots Botanics range before actually, and it's very good. I used the mud mask thingy (bought a sachet type one) and it made my skin so smooth afterwards.

The only problem for me is I find I'm quite lazy about my skincare. I don't spend a lot of time on it (or certainly not as much as I should anyway), so I prefer a product I can rub in/on just before I put my makeup on each day. Rather than one I have to apply, let set, cleanse off etc. I don't really have that time in the evenings to devote to my skin.

Actually... maybe I should make a NY resolution to pay a little more attention to my skin? I'm 34 in the summer and I'm certainly noticing the wrinkles now ?.

I dont know about CDLM but i used to buy Clarins moisturizer and i loved it as its not too greasy. its about £34 for a pot and lasts about 3 months so not bad at all. However I havent had the money to buy it for a few months, and experimented with Bio-Oil and I have to say, it has worked wonders!! I had some tiny broken veins on my cheeks, and its almost made them go away entirely! my skin is smooth and healthy looking. just apply a thin layer every morning and night. you'd think it was super greasy, but it is not. Hope that helps someone!

I'm not sure I understand that. I don't think spending £90 on mosturiser is exciting. I'm much rather spend £10 on mosturiser and do something which is exciting with the other 80.

I recently discovered a miracle stuff for my skin, which has made it lovely, spot free and beyootiful for the first time in years.

Sadly, it's epaderm. £10 for a big tub, smells of nothing and no pretty packaging ?

Buy some Creme de la Mer, empty it out, fill it with Epaderm and add a dash of perfume et voila!

Maybe CDLM users could recoup some of their costs by flogging empty containers on eBay? ??

    ?

It's just as well I've got cheapskate skin actually as the idea of spending £90 on unnecessary stuff for myself makes me hyperventilate with horror. I think I'm missing out on a whole world of retail pleasure.

    I adore nice creams/serums!

I haven't used CDLM, but favourites are Stri-Vectin SD (the eye cream), Skin.ny face cream, Midnight Secret by Guerlain night cream, Precriptives "Line filler" and Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair serum. In my experience, I have seen improvements after consistent(ish!) use. I also love Crystal Clear Microdermabrasion facials.
