Curtains that 'puddle' - hot or not?

Croyde, 19 September, 2008 at 23:03 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 18

I bought some new bedroom curtains, but like a total dumbass picked up the 90 drop instead of the smaller ones so they are much too long and puddle on the floor. Now is this a good look or do I need to look into having them shortened? They are heavy weight lined drapes, ring tops if that makes any difference!! I can't decide if I like them or not so HRML

Can curtains be hot? i am not sure

i think it depends a great deal on the fabric and the curtain height

better a puddler than a badly taken up

(so sayeth she who hates hand hemming ?)

Do you have kids /cats that may try to climb them? If so - not hot.

Is shifting them to hoover going to be a nightmare? If so - not hot.

If none of the above apply, and the alternative is 16 meters of hemming? Then HOT HOT HOT!

    Not

    <nope, mine don't 'puddle' only been up a year>

Bah I am lazy, I was thinking of asking Mr R to sort the bedroom for my b'day present. I am so bloody fed up of our bedroom. Our 20m old has a lovely bedroom. Its madness, like he cares! lol

If you're going for the romantic drapey look then go for it, personally I prefer them to be close to the floor but not quite touching it. mostly because it's eaier when drawing them, just looks tidier, and also so my cat doesn't decide to sleep on the bottoms.

I think it very much depends on the curtains. I'd say lightweight materials lend themselves to 'puddling' more than heavyweight ones. It will also depend on the lining, the way they fall etc.

Ultimately you'll be the one looking at them - do you like the way they look?

I think it's hard to pull off a look like that unless you have really great (big) proportioned windows. Otherwise it'll look like you've bought the wrong drop........

Pale colour? Going to sweep along the floor? Not hot because they will look grubby before too long.

Personally - take them up to the right length, and then get some cushion covers made from the excess fabric! It's how I got two cushion covers from a pair of ikea curtains. ?

Bleurgh, no. I hate puddled curtains. Messy and look as if you're trying to get a "look".

Its a large dorma window but not a grand massive window. I like the curtains, but think that with cats and the type of fabric they are I agree that they look like I picked up the wrong size ....so they will have to come down and be taken somewhere to be sorted as the material is far to heavy for me to hem by hand.

I knew that it looked wrong but needed someone else to tell me it looked wrong lol

    Thanks all!

Mine don't puddle, they're just too long but i don't have the time or inclination to shorten them as i'm not at all bothered if they look bad or not. they do the job.

My MIL shortened our curtains and she got the bedroom and living rooms ones the wrong way round (they are all beige but slightly different).. we have short arses in the bedrooms and puddling in the living room and they are a PITA. I prefer the short arse ones.

I know the answer is to swap them over but the bedroom ones have the black out stuff attached.

If you get them shortened you might have enough fabric left for some matching cushion covers! ?

If they are ready-made curtains, why don't you put them back in the packaging and take them back to swap for the right drop ones?

I would cut them to the right length and then make cushions out of the extra fabric.

Our downstairs windows are between 7' and 8' long, so we have had to have ours made to measure anyway. i like a hint of puddle on ours. when you have big windows it looks better, imo, because when you pull the curtains back (wide windows) they lose their length iyswim and look odd.

i think it might look cheesy if you had enormous velvet curtains - who am i kidding? i'd love it, i'm a massive goth. but my curtains and carpet in the living room are kind of eau de nil green - doesn't look goth, probably more like a non-floral laura ashley thing ?

We accidentally had them for ages (curtains were made for other windows of the same width but about twice the height) and it took us nearly 4 years to get them taken up ?. They were filthy at the bottom and never hung properly and were a pain in the backside when it came to cleaning around them I much prefer them at their new length.
