The story begins 1914 at the beginning of World War I amidst great mistrust between England and Germany. Einstein leaves his family in Zurich when he is recruited to Berlin University along with many other German scientists. Meanwhile, Cambridge University has recently appointed Eddington as the new Director of the Cambridge Observatory, a position once held by the great British scientist Isaac Newton.
In Berlin, Einstein discovers he has been recruited by the military. Despite Einstein's blatant disapproval of the war and lack of respect for authority, he is kept on by the University due to the possibility he may prove Newton's theory wrong.
Meanwhile, back in Cambridge Eddington also find himself battling with authority, when he feels pressured to give a lecture declaring Einstein's theory impossible simply because he is German.
The two great scientists start to correspond when Eddington discovers Einstein has not signed the Manifesto of the Civilized World, aligning German science with the German military. For Einstein and Eddington truth and science is what's important, not nationality.
Even though the two scientists are constantly reminded of the fatalities and prejudice caused by the war, they continue work together to prove Einstein's Theory of General Relativity.
