Dealing with jumped up little oiks

barongreenback, 17 December, 2008 at 11:40 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

I've just had to slap down (intellectually speaking and with as much tact and diplomacy as I could muster) a jumped up junior member of staff outside my department who questioned my professional judgement in a rather curt manner. In the short term I feel smug and self satisfied (surprise ?) as naturally I was right although this has the potential future problems as he has a degree of autonomy that could affect my relationship with key professional contacts. Anyone have any tips for gently forcing through an opinion without creating bad feeling?

I should say that this particular individual has a reputation for being an arse but I'd rather keep people on side at the moment.

Due to the fact I'm a 'wear your heart on your sleeve' kinda gal, and 'WYSIWYG' and 'says it as it is', I don't have too much tact so I can't give you any tips unfortunately. Although I'm always willing to learn, so if anyone else has any wise pieces of advice, I'll take them on board! ?

What I really want to know is though, what did you get Mrs GB in the end Baron? You bought the toothbrush, didn't you ?

I'm going with the cashmere jumper idea as she was admiring the feel of a jumper I recently bought (just 2% cashmere though ?) and I've got her a couple of other bits as well, including some chocolates from a chocolatier in Birmingham that are fab.

On the other point, I think I'll have to just accept that he's an arse and now make a conscious effort to make him look stupid at every possible opportunity, which is actually quite an easy task. Sod diplomacy.

Send him up to MrJMP's office - it will be like a boot camp.

I'm sure she has done lots of admiring - especially of late - what's underneath the cashmere too!

Good call .. I love my cashmeres. Although I've sadly outgrown some of mine - including 2 brand new ones, never worn ?

If you have a jumped up oik who needs putting in his place, make sure you have a big audience each time. Don't waste it! ?

I had problems like this with our IT department feeling they could question me and also the man in charge of IT spend as the IT bod didn't think we really needed something that I already had full approval to get bought. He actually told me that he would refuse to order it. I basically referred him to the partner in charge of IT spend who rather bluntly told him to order what he had been asked for as the spend was approved.

Can you speak to the manager of the jumped up oik and agree the process for future times?

Baron, did you ever get a reply from the company you complained to about their staff member leaving your toilet soiled? (Sorry, I can't remember who it was)
