Deed poll to double barrel - when did you do it?!

Sophie, 11 April, 2022 at 13:51 Posted on Planning 0 4
Hi! I’m going to double-barrel my name when I get married in September and my partner will keep his own name. It looks like I will need to change it by deed poll in order to have the change recognised by the long list of organisations that will want to know, like banks and govt depts etc etc
Has anyone else done this or is doing it and could maybe tell me how easy/not easy it is?! Also would you do it before the wedding or after? Any help appreciated! Thank you!

When I split from my first husband I wanted to change back to my maiden name before the divorce was finalised. It was really straight forward to change via deed poll. Unless you want to change your passport etc for honeymoon straight after wedding I would wait. It was quite some years ago now but from what I remember it only took a couple of weeks from completing the paperwork to receiving the official document

My understanding is that your wedding certificate counts as a deed poll - your name is legally changed to your married name on you getting married (assuming you sign it as your married name - in your case, double barrelled) so you don't have to do a deed poll as well.

Thank you, I'll look into this - the vicar didn't seem to think this would do but I'll have a look into it now! Much appreciated!
