Defrosting mince question

Why cant you just defrost it? for speed, put it in a freezer bag, and put it in room temperature water, it ll defrost pretty fast.

Thanks I'll try that. Every time I try to microwave defrost I end up cooking part of it which isn't ideal if I'm trying to make it into meatballs ?

You can cook it from frozen or let it defrost. It's perfectly fine either way.

If you cook fresh mince from frozen it's in a massive block and takes ages to cook properly, whereas frozen mince cooks evenly.

PMSL at the disctinction between "fresh mince that has been frozen" and "frozen mince" ?. Bleurgh. Chuck it in the bin and order Chinese.

There are times when I buy fresh mince if it's on offer and freeze it in the packet if I'm not using it straight away...therefore cooking a block of frozen mince to use in spag bol! You have to scrape the cooked bits off the block...it does work, honest ?

How very dare you Nick. I have (in my head) a picture of very grey looking frozen mince pieces which made me think of it.

I still don't understand why you'd buy frozen mince when you can buy fresh and freeze it, I don't see the point.

Gryfon, why don't you just defrost it - it'd be 10x easier.

I put said block of mince on a plate, cover with a piece of kitchen towel and defrost in microwave. I take the defrosted edges off every couple of minutes to stop them starting to cook while allowing the centre of block to defrost properly.

I've never bought frozen mince though, it looks like grey faggots.

Can you not take the mince out of the freezer in the morning so that it defrosts during the day, rather than trying to cook a big ol' lump of frozen stuff? ??

Yes, the strands of mince are individually frozen - it's most bizarre and certainly not the way real meat comes out of the mincer. I suspect it's hosed off lips & arseholes, reformed using a kitty litter machine.
