Destination Wedding v uk Wedding

Megan, 6 December, 2023 at 22:05 Posted on Honeymoons & Getting Married Abroad 0 3
Hi guys, I got engaged to the love of my life this week. We are both so happy and excited.

We are considering our options in relation to a destination or a UK Wedding (near to where we live). Is it actually cheaper to get married abroad with a smaller number of guests?

If we get married in UK we are looking at around 70 guests, whereas abroad it’d be more like 14..
I just wanted some opinions of other people who have looked into this or have their own experience they can share. Looking for pros/cons.
Thanks ☺️

It really depends on what kind of wedding you want. Something low-key in the UK for 70 will end up being cheaper than something really high-end overseas for 14.

Other things to factor in: Were you planning on having an overseas honeymoon anyway? If so, your travel and accommodation costs won't be any more if you also get married in the same location.

Are all your key guests likely to be able to afford to travel to a destination wedding? Are they all going to be physically able to? The costs will be dramatically increased for your guests, unless you are paying towards their travel and accommodation - and if you do that, then it would definitely not be cheaper than a UK wedding!

Hi Megan! A huge congratulations! What an exciting time! I can only reply as a guest to your abroad wedding! Are your 14 guests able to afford it? Are you allowing children? Before you ask your bridal party let them know it could be abroad and a price before they accept? That is ofcourse if you’re not paying for your guests. We have an abroad wedding next year. The invite seemed amazing that it was only £400 each for the weekend, but then you had to add on flights, parking at the airport, insurance, transfers if you didn’t arrive on the stated days. We’ve added it to £1400 and there’s no way I’m paying that to attend anyones wedding. That did not include attire, gifts and spending money. We didn’t need much spending money though but it all still adds up. But on the other hand it’s your big day. Prioritize what is most important for you both on your wedding day and go from there. Enjoy!

I’m currently looking into this! We’ve decided that the legal aspect of getting married abroad is too complicated but the cost is so much less. We’ve decided to have a civil ceremony in the UK at a registry office with close family, have a symbolic ceremony abroad, just us two at our honeymoon destination and then have an evening reception when we get back.

It’s going to mean our family and friends can celebrate with us but we get the beauty of the ceremony abroad too. Neither of us like being the centre of attention so we’re really looking forward to the way we’re doing it.
