difference between cheif bridesmaid and maid of honour?

I'm not 100% sure but I think a Maid of Honour is the term for a bridesmaid that's married.

Isn't one just the American term? Maid of honour is unmarried. Matron of honour is married.

Maid of honour tend to be older and Married, or sometimes their may be 3 or 4 and you don't want to raise one above the others but you want to acknowledge them slightly more, kind of thing, so they do not have to be married
